Milk Jam

This was a surprise. Henry at her door. It was kind of strange, thought Josie. He'd brought a basket of goodies.

"I made Milk Jam," Henry smiled as if it might be an elixir for what ever allied you. "No exploding cans, either, this is made with real milk, real sugar and real vanilla beans." He edged in as if he were not going to stay on the porch.

"Oh." Still, Josie didn't like the word, Milk Jam.

"Its good on croissants and fruit. You'll see." He told her as she looked through the basket with strawberries and croissants. How could he possibly be Derrick's boyfriend?

She went to pour him coffee.

"Are you sure you should really be drinking that?" He was curious.

"Well, I don't drink like a pot of it, or anything." Now she was more self conscious, or perhaps conscious of something else. He knew. "So, Derrick told you?"

"Yeah, finally." He shrugged as if it wasn't that big of a deal. Naturally, he got out his little picnic and showed her how the milk jam could be used. She sampled it, and it was surprisingly amazing.

"Why are you being so nice to me?" Josie was a little puzzled about it. Actually, Henry was being much more affectionate than Topher, lately. She knew he was trying, but he seemed to be so shy around her lately, as if she might crack open. She guessed.

"Why can't I be?" Henry asked right back as he noticed her take another strawberry dipped in the milk jam.

"I dunno. Its just, weird. I guess." Josie sighed. It wasn't like anyone was celebrating the ordeal. Her mom barely said anything, and Derrick was never around. She was beginning to expect this was just going to be something quiet and mundane, and she was suppose to not talk about the baby.

"So, are you going to any support groups?" He spoke of one at school. One for teenagers in her same predicament. Some already with babies.

Josie shook her head, no.

"Why not?" Henry looked startled.

She shrugged.

"You sure, you're well?" He offered to take her shopping. "You don't have to buy anything. Just see what's out there, you know, baby stuff. Maternity outfits."

"I just don't want to go overboard." Perhaps she was a bit pessimistic. But she was so tired lately, and the vitamins gave off a strange smell that she could hardly stand, herself. And her boobs. A growth spurt she could hardly control. And yes, her yoga pants were tight. She could barely fit into them.

"Its a happy time. You should have a smile. Not, thinking the world's gonna end tomorrow." He told her. "According to my Mom, it was the happiest time of her life. And look how I turned out?" His silly grin was inspiring.

He went to refrigerate the things he'd brought her. "Now come on? We've got the whole day to ourselves. We'll start at Target. End up a Wal-mart." He jingled his car keys as if time was wasting.

  5. Wish someone would bring me milk jam. Never even heard of it before, but it sounds darn nice, especially with strawberries like he suggested.

  6. Milk Jam is awful hard to make. Don't try making it in the crockpot. It does well to use condensed milk..and heat it for a very long time in the oven..on low heat.
