nothing that ordinary
"Meet me for lunch." Topher's text was a bit mysterious, but it made Josie smile, anyway. She waited for his car in the sunlit area of the commons. She's gone to the nurse saying she didn't feel well. And it was fixed where she could go home. Waiting for her Mom, but not really. Maybe it was skipping, but she really couldn't think clearly about anything now. He drove up in his little sports car in front of the school, and she managed her way to him, quickly in the deceiving cold.
"You made it." He was all smiles. She smiled too, although, she didn't expect too. There was still a silence. She still felt he was here to tell her they were done. She guessed. But he handed over the bag. It was still warm.
"Is it too cold for the park?" He asked.
She shook her head, no. She guessed not. Besides, she had on her trusty hat and sweater. Perhaps she could brave, anything. Soon enough he found a spot at a picnic area. There was an unexpected flood their last summer, and the aftermath still showed how high the water receded with the leaves and the debris. Still, they found a spot soon enough, and he laid out the quiche and the fruit. Some bottled drinks too.
"I'm sorry. I'm really..really sorry." He told her. "I just, you know..thought..." Topher winked when he squinted.
"Oh." She didn't really want to talk about her virginity or really the baby, but she guessed they had too. "I lost my virginity, a while ago. This." She guessed she was looking at her shirt. But it still felt rather invisible to her. "This is ..just weird. You know, um..last thing I expected." But didn't it usually happen that way? Maybe. "I mean, my friend..well..you know. It was a bad time for him."
"So..so you know this guy? He's not your ex?" Topher was full of questions as he pawed his fork through his quiche. He wasn't really eating.
"No. We're still friends." She shrugged as if they lived in a commune. It made her happy to think so. Like it was all cool. If only. "I mean, he's having to deal, a lot. Believe me, he's in total shock too. I dunno if he can even tell his boyfriend."
"Huh." Topher looked a bit miffed. "Maybe..maybe I should..meet him."
"Sure. I'm not gonna lie, about him. Seriously, Derrick and I are over. Completely." It felt good to say it. Except, there was the baby, and she knew Derrick would be around for it.
