making it work

OK, it was true. Audrey showed up in the clothes she wore the day before. And yes, they smelled as sweet as ganja. But she was at the library all afternoon.

"I'll even stay until closing." She promised Asa. Her cousin, Kayla, was taking a late lunch. Possibly, Audrey was still a little woozy. It had been ages since she'd let herself have any fun. Of course, it was fun with Topher too. Really, she wished she was still asleep in his bed.

"That's great, Audrey." Asa was all Mr. Congenial. Perfection to say the least. His life was so saintly, she presumed. He never had a problem with anything.

She did her best fake grin then bumped her head in the doorway.

"Do you  need something to eat?" He looked concerned as he got her to sit down in the chair across from his desk in the YA section of the library.

"I dunno." She looked sleepy. Audrey couldn't remember the last time she ate. They'd eaten cookie dough from Topher's freezer last night. She guessed. A yawn overtook that thought.

"There might be some leftover pizza in the breakroom." He told her.

"Really!" Suddenly, her stomach lurched. She laughed.

"Are you sure, you, don't want to go home?" Asa focused on her eyes. She cast her stare down to her stomach that would not shut up of hunger. She didn't want him to have a good look at the pupils of her light brown eyes, either.

"No." She was afraid too. It would be bitter with ugly arguments. It was much better at Topher's. At least she wasn't under a microscope there. Yes, she did insane things, sometimes. Even at home. She'd slept with the cable guy when he came over to put in a new recorder. Her parents were away at work at the time. Perhaps, her addictions sprouted everywhere. She couldn't help it. Audrey was trying really hard to have her life under control. However, she was her biggest enemy. "Look, I'm going to go to work."

"I want you to have some pizza, first." Asa insisted.

Audrey nodded. She'd eat pizza and drink several cans of Mountain Dew, if she could, and hope everything would be normal.
