ever after
"You are making this..." Ian shook his head, tried not to laugh as he dumped the trash and put things away in the car when it was time to leave the park where the play was presented. "So tricky."
"What do you mean?"
He turned back to her. Josie looked innocent enough. Always would. Something about those eyes, puzzling yet surprised.
"So, ready to come back next week for Romeo and Juliet?" Maybe King Lear wasn't her cup of tea. But he wasn't sure she'd be into Romeo and Juliet, either. "Are you sure you like Shakespeare?"
"Of course, I do. My mother did plenty of Shakespeare when she was in college." Josie said as if she were genetically inclined to enjoy the arts.
"Before you were born, I gather?" He couldn't help but smile, yet he knew he'd put her off.
It was a quiet ride home. He thought she might have been crying. Ian felt a little guilty about that.
"How about ice cream? A milk shake?" The drive through was still open. She didn't have to be right home. She wanted chocolate and he got strawberry. Soon enough they were trying each others shake as if it were a taste test.
He drove out to the river. They looked at the moon and the stars while setting on the hood of the car.
"You know, I like you. I do. Its just..." Ian wasn't sure how to put this. "Well, what would Derrick think? And-"
"I don't care what he thinks. He gets to do whatever he wants, doesn't he?" Josie was in a pout. "I'm tired of the one, being stuck. Everyone is having fun. And here I am, having to carry someone around for practically a year..and..and, I don't even get to keep it."
"Its not like you won't see the baby, you will. Its just a technicality. You are still someone's mother. You'll be in its life." He told her, but Josie pouted more.
He put his arm around her. He sweetly kissed her cheek. This time when she reached for him, he let her kiss him. Her warmth was golden. He couldn't think any place he'd rather be than by her side, and Ian had a good feeling he was just what she wanted. He knew Josie would be the best part of summer.
