when the music ends

"Promise, you won't feel sorry me." Josie worked as quickly as she could to have a picnic basket ready for the night. They were going to see Shakespeare on the Green. No one else was interested. Of course, Max and Daisy were off with her friend and Lola. Henry and Derrick were out to a concert.

Naturally, she raided the fridge last minute and made off with the left over potato salad, a baked chicken from the deli and washed strawberries.

"I promise, I'm not feeling sorry for you." Ian helped her load up the basket in his car. He'd brought chilled bottles of water.

"And you've never done this before?" She quizzed him. He did have a quilt in the trunk.

"Never." He almost winked.

"Just one more thing." She wanted to know before they left. "Do, I look fat in this?" She didn't really need maternity clothes yet. But her dark yoga caprices were extra large and  her bright pink tunic was a bit neon, to say the least.

"No, no..you look great." She knew he was genuinely nice.

He let her decide what to listen too. Of course, she wanted to toss the Smiths out of the window. No, sad and lonely music. And no thoughts of Topher, either. She slipped in some BEST COAST. Yes, this was just what she needed.

They were at the venue soon enough. It was getting dark, and they planted themselves in the middle of it all. A part of her felt as if they were around too many people. What would it take to get him, alone? She tried not to dwell on this. Perhaps, bringing the chicken was quite messy. Still, they made pretty much a dent in it. If only she'd brought croissants or Nutella to go with the strawberries.

There was a slight thought of paying attention to the play too. But she liked the idea that he was so near. She wiped his face even. He sort of laughed as he leaned in and cleaned the mess from the corner of her mouth, too.

Josie tried her best to pay attention to those on stage in their elegant gowns and strange tights. She reached for him as if she'd rather make out, but he held her hand instead. A part of her felt crushed. He seemed to enjoy her company. Had she been wrong about him?

Finally, he put his arm around her, and it was great. Except, she still wanted more.
