a little possibilty

Aidan wasn't sure if it were a plan or not. But he felt the need to be there for Audrey. Just as a friend. Nothing else. She was, after all the first girl he met on campus when he started at the University. She was not Elaine.

Her smile was infectious, and he guessed they flirted from the get go. It was hard to say now, but it was always easy with Audrey. They spoke of movies and bands and about nothing. A part of him wondered if he would have been happier with her. Audrey was never serious. Unlike Elaine.

But he'd been in love with Elaine since he was a sophomore in high school. The only girl he'd ever been with, and he guessed he was trying to not break that record, evidently.

He watched Audrey in his mother's kitchen. She was making banana bread.

"You, are just guessing now." He could see how she added things to the mashed up bananas that had been growing dark on the kitchen table.

"No, I'm not." She smiled as she added cinnamon and even vinegar.

"I think you are." He winced trying to smile, thinking he was going to have to eat this in an hour or so.

They had a plan. She could stay here in the room above the garage. Unfortunately, they hadn't cleaned it out yet. So they were sleeping together, but nothing was going on. He was not exactly in a place where he was the man of the hour. Could be the blood pressure pills he was on? Honestly, he felt as... some has been. Yet, there was Audrey, happy as some funny fifth grader he remembered from his student teaching.

Finally, she put the batter in the loaf pan and slid it into the oven.

"Now, don't forget about it." He handed over the cat timer to her. He'd set it for the allotted time.

"Yes, sir." She smirked.

Suddenly, he thought of the time that he went to the strip bar across the river. He had to see for himself that she was stripper there. It was her. Aidan wouldn't mention it now. She was someone else then. Maybe she was back to her old self, again.

But he remembered how she liked to get high. Not that he ever got high with her. He was on the straight and narrow. Even then. Still all her adventures in boys and bands amused him. He was always up for a good listen. Smiling constantly as if maybe it was her getting him high.

Although, he had a lot going on. He guessed. Maybe it wasn't worth the trouble with Elaine. Yet, he felt he'd put his life on hold for her. Then he did one slip up, and his wife couldn't handle it. It was as if their marriage went up in flames. She'd cheated on him, and it hurt so bad. He might still be full of hurt, right now, but Audrey was here and she took his mind off the divorce.

Aidan knew he couldn't fix Audrey. Yet he wanted to see that girl he once knew who was so smart. She just needed to find herself.

  6. I dunno, I think it would do him good to just enjoy whatever this is with her at the moment. Needs to just feel things out before jumping into anything major.
