may the odds be in your favor

Kayla couldn't afford to get mixed up with Audrey and all her problems. There was enough to deal with, already.

At least the morning sickness, which was general at four in the afternoon, was wearing off. She wanted to say she felt stronger, but Kayla couldn't believe that. Especially, when she'd see Ian in passing. She felt faint around him. Speechless, in fact. Even if she'd wanted to talk to him, she couldn't. She could hardly hear herself think. How was she ever going to get through this?

Oliver made her puddings and cream soups, as if that was all she really needed. Although, she informed him he was just making her fat. One more little thing to wedge between their marriage. Of course, even the thought of pork products or pizza made her sick, and Oliver loved bacon. Possibly, everything made her sick.

She was ill of listening to Audrey go on about how she really wasn't using drugs. Lies. How could she lie like this? But then Kayla remembered...maybe she wasn't much different from her cousin. Now was she? She was a liar, too.

Except, she said nothing. She let Oliver do all the talking. Let him think what he wanted. Just go with it. She had to. She must. Many a time, she found herself waking up in a cold sweat. Being pregnant behind bars.

There was a thought, she could just runaway. But where? No, she stayed at her desk. She was diligent with her reports. Perhaps a little mean to the patrons when over dues weren't paid.

"Don't you think its a little harsh? Barring patrons from check out when their over dues are just five bucks? We used to at least let them check out three items." Asa brought this up one morning before the library opened. He looked at her as if Kayla was the library Nazi lady.

"Its not harsh at all. People are getting away ..with..murder." Kayla snapped.

Asa just laughed.

"That's a good one, Kayla. What next? Going start charging staff with over dues?" He smiled as if her mind could only calculate mayhem.

"That's a great idea." She looked at him brightly with a sly smile.

"You are kidding, aren't you?" Asa looked at her seriously.

"I dunno. Am I?" She glared back. Yes, she took her job seriously. Someone had too. The director was always looking for more goals and better ideas about how to keep the library from going under.

Better to think about her job than to dwell on what could be. Besides, she was pregnant and she needed to get through this somehow. She couldn't let Audrey mess this up. Audrey stayed out of what she was doing, yet Audrey was she not doing her job, either.

It was Henry who brought it to her attention. He didn't even work here. She didn't pass the information along to everyone. She could only hope Audrey got her act together soon.

    Yet, maybe she should.
