just one smile

"I have to find out what's going on." Olivia helped pack the picnic basket with containers of salads and those apple and raisin cookie bars that Ravi absolutely loved. They'd decided to go to the carnival by the river. There was all day music and then fireworks.

"No, you don't. Its not your job." Ravi shook his head, wanting her to stay out of this with Amber. "Its her life. She seems perfectly happy. OK?"

"But what about Roger? Maybe, maybe she's going to try-"

Ravi put his fore finger on her lips. They weren't going to spend the day dwelling on Amber and especially Roger. "Sh." He eyeballed her. "Are you listening to yourself? Really? We have the 4th. And I want to only think FUN. We are going on the rollercoaster. We are going to see friends. We are going to listen to free music. We are not talking about this. Not today."

He didn't wish to talk about it at all. He thought he knew Olivia, so well, but this Amber fiasco had just tore her apart. "This..this is so not you. Snap out of it." He took a step back, looked at his black socks with his sneakers. He was in his plaid chinos. Suddenly, he felt he was becoming his Dad. He was getting out of these socks, right now.

"I'm sorry," she yelped from the kitchen while he was in the bedroom looking for white socks. He set on the bed and pulled off his sneakers. Finally she leaned against the doorway and he thought he was in bliss. He smiled as if that was her cue to come and get him. She did.

Suddenly, it was full of laughter and the picnic was on hold. At least for thirty minutes. Not that he wanted to move any faster. This was the fix they needed to be together. Her hands on him and he breathed her in as if this was what made any holiday glorious. Being with each other. This kind of happiness that spilled over in everything else they did.

He stroked the hair out of her face. She didn't speak of Amber. The silence was golden as they found each others lips. Before they knew it, they were undressed in bed. Yes, this was a holiday he couldn't help but thought it started out right, in bed.
