not every little bird knows

When Topher first got news of his grandmother's passing, the first person he called was Lynsey. He didn't know why, but he felt as if she were his best friend. He knew he couldn't burden this with Willow since she was planning a wedding, he last recalled. And Ricki wasn't going to come home with him.

As it was Lynsey met him at the airport. She was right by his side for everything. He couldn't ask anything like that of Ricki. He hoped she understood. Suddenly, he felt as if his life was once again uprooted, and the music business was some sort of summer daydream that didn't get very far.

It was not easy facing his parents, Willow, the thought of going back to college. But it was all decided. Especially, when he found out he got his grandmother's house in the will. It was so convenient. Suddenly.

"I won't let you be alone," Lynsey promised and Topher stared at her wide-eyed, wondering what that could mean. "I can move in. And..and so can Luc and his roommate. You'll see. It'll be fine."

Topher guessed it would be so, but all he wanted to do was sleep. He felt guilty for not being there for his grandmother. He hadn't listened to her phone calls, like he should have. He was always busy with something.

But he had a house. Those troubles were over. And he'd soon be back to school. The house was just as he remembered. Of course, Gran hadn't thrown a lot a way. A part of him didn't want to touch it, either. What did he know what an heir-loom was?

That alone took weeks. He didn't have that kind of time.

"Mom, just has to make up her mind." He couldn't decide. Of course, it was Lynsey that got it all in order. She was a life savior of sorts. Yet, the only one Topher really wanted to hear from was Ricki. He couldn't explain it to Lynsey, but he missed his old life, or was that his new life? And this one was the old one?

But Lynsey didn't give him a chance to talk about it. The house was old and big. Possibly falling apart. But the screened in back porch was just as he remembered. It did feel like home. Only, Lynsey wouldn't let him make a shrine of his grandmother's past. Evidently, there was a new sheriff in town, and her name was Lynsey.

"Don't tell me, you're sleeping with her." It wasn't a question. Willow knew the answer.

"Stop with the judging." Topher didn't know where this was going. He was back at the coffee shop, but not to get his old job.

"Josie will have her baby soon." Willow told him in the next breath. As if he'd came here to ask about it. He felt so indifferent now. Maybe a little angry. Kind of sad, wondering if he could have made a good Dad, if he'd stuck around and made a go of it with Josie.

"Great. Just great." Topher gritted. He didn't want to know about Josie. He knew Willow was expecting him to drop Lynsey like an old shoe. Topher wanted to show her, he'd changed. He really had. Hopefully, for the better.

  1. I dunno about Topher. I feel bad for him, but he's not too bad off if he's got Lynsey to take care of him.
