on the rocks

"I dunno if I want to live with all these people." Ricki couldn't help but complain. She'd felt safe here at Topher's until Ruben showed up. Of course, she wasn't even sure Topher was listening to her. He looked so tired and out of it. He wasn't exactly enjoying his job. A part of her felt it was her fault that he worked so hard.

"What do you mean?" He looked like he was sleep walking, but it was six in the morning and he was making himself ham and cheese sandwiches for his lunch in the kitchen.

"See, if you were here, you would have known." She didn't mean to whine about it, but he wasn't home enough.

"God, babe, you know, they keep changing my shift around and since I'm still on the newbie list, I gotta go with it." He looked at her sleepy in his denim shirt over a very tired Tee. His jeans were ripped and his workboots were scuffed. He looked as if he wasn't going anywhere very fast.

"I know." She didn't mean to be so angry. But she was scared when Ruben got all nasty. "I just didn't know what he might do to Dorian or..anyone else, here."

"Well, he's gone now. Dorian took care of it." Topher sounded as if it were not a problem. "Lesson learned."

Ricki nodded.

"Look, I've been thinking of getting my old job back." She finally admitted.

"What?" He squinted hard as if that couldn't happen. "They'll want you to go everywhere. Like Wisconsin, or Minnesota."

"Not, necessarily." She sighed. Actually, some people here called her. "This is the polka capital of the world. Well, they claim, but actually in the states. Anyway, my show is well missed in the Polka community." As she told him this, she was sure he compared this to her being a clown in the circus. "Anyway, It'll be just weekends. I won't be playing in a band, just the host, introducing bands, and I would possibly play a little in some of these bands."

"Whatever." By the sound of his voice, she knew he wasn't interested. She guessed he'd be jealous to know she'd be making more money than he did.
