not quite work related

Asa wouldn't come right out and say it, but he had to face facts. He had two work wives. One was head of circulation and the other in tech at the library. They were not getting along.

He knew for some time that Kayla was having troubles. She wasn't one to talk about it, but things seemed to be better after she had her baby. For a while, he thought she might quit, but she was back to her desk in no time. She wasn't as moody as she used to be. Or at least, he thought so.

"What is going on, with you and Audrey?" Asa decided he needed to know. It was very hard to have a meeting when the two wouldn't even look at each other.

"Nothing." Kayla gave him her best quirky librarian stare as if this must be all Audrey's fault. He should have known Kayla wouldn't talk about it. After all, she prided herself in being a private person. So he took Audrey out to lunch.

Give her plenty of tacos and a tall iced tea, and she was ready to blab nonstop.

"So why aren't you, talking to Kayla?" He wanted to know as they sat, eating the enchilada special with tacos on the side and plenty of salsa, chips and of course, guacamole.

"Why isn't she talking to me?" Audrey bit into a chip and slurped on her tea.

"Why isn't she?" Asa re-questioned.

"OK, there is this thing." Audrey gave him a playful shrug in one of her floral summer dresses hidden under an old yellow cardigan.

"What thing?" He could hardly eat with all the anticipation, but she kept scarfing down the chips and guacamole as if there were no tomorrow.

"You can't tell anybody." She looked at him seriously.

"OK." He might have to tell Jane. They didn't keep secrets.

"I accidentally told Kayla I was her sister at this thing, for Luc." She sighed as she finished off a taco. "Oh yeah, my brother and his girlfriend are gonna have a kid."

Asa was trying to digest the first part she told him.

"Well, are you?" He asked with a wince.

"Am I what?" Audrey eyed him.

"Are you, her sister?" Asa winced.

"Yeah, but see her parents never ever got around to telling her she was adopted." Audrey pursed her lips.

"Something like this, should..should bring you two closer together," Asa said. "What does your brother think?"

"Luc? I don't think he knows. He probably doesn't care." She bit into a chip.

"He might? So who's his girlfriend?" Asa wanted to know. When Audrey said her name, Asa couldn't help but smile. Olivia was the last person he ever thought of being with Audrey's brother and on her way to motherhood.
