Having it your way

It was such a weird day.

Fish thought how it got off to such a horrible start. His parents were none too pleased to find out he was taking driver's ed with Syreeta. But she'd came to his defense. Some how, she'd sidetracked their Dad before he went off the deep end.

Besides, it was Fish's money. He'd be giving them an insurance break, as well.

"Its not the end of the world, Dad?" Syreeta kept reminding everyone, and she was glad he was there with her. She was a nervous wreck.

He got a call near the end of the morning to come to the library after lunch. He hadn't been expecting to get the job offer.

"I still can't believe it." He shook his head as if perhaps he might be the worst person in the world. He was still shocked. "I've got Henry's old job."

Shan's smile was sly as he put his arm around Fish.

"I say we celebrate." And they did.

Shan took them out for a steak.

"I don't know why you're so down about it," Shan said later. "You deserve that job. You'll be amazing."

Fish wasn't oozing in confidence.

"It just feels wrong. I'd applied for the shelving position." Fish still wasn't sure he could eat a whole steak, rare like Shan could.

"That, guy who's doing community service, got that job. He couldn't do yours." Shan shrugged as he watched Fish's plate with the sirloin and baked potato. Fish had a good mind to slide it over for Shan to finish.

"Yeah, I guess." Fish supposed it would be OK. Chances like this didn't happen for him everyday. But what if Henry found out? What would he think of him?

He really hadn't intended to steal anything from Henry, but here he was with Henry's ex-boyfriend and now his job.
