like it could be

at the library

Driver's ed was a piece of cake. Fish wasn't so sure why he'd been so worried. Actually, his reflexes were really good. It helped to see this older guy a few weekends before driver's ed who was out and about on his own at the grocery store. He was far more crippled than Fish, and he had his own car.

He and Shan had watched him at lunch, wondering if he were on his own, and then they saw him get into a brand new car and drive away like any good driver. Still Fish worried. He wanted to be a good driver. Just like he wanted to be a good worker, too.

Although, at the library, he didn't think Audrey much liked him. He knew who she missed. Henry was well missed around here. Fish knew he couldn't feel his shoes, completely. Everyone asked about Henry. From little girls to very old women.

"Fish? What kind of name is Fish?" Asked one old guy. At least, Fish found the newspaper he wanted. Fish knew there was a lot to live up too. He wasn't so sure anyone would get used to him being at Henry's computer.

Audrey snatched Henry's little knick-knacks. Even a picture of Shan and Henry together.

"I don't suppose you'll want that." Audrey took it.

Fish almost said something, but decided against it. He didn't find the records and computer stuff that hard. It was really the simple stuff, like covering books. Maybe he just wasn't good enough for the job.

"Don't say that." Shan said when he came to pick him up. "You, are good at this. You, deserve this job." Of course, he looked over to see some one with a cart of books. He winced. "Who's that?"

"The new shelver." Fish shrugged. He didn't exactly catch his name. It wasn't that the guy was hanging out in the breakroom. He was really quiet. "He took Ian's job."

"Ian? What do you mean? What happened to him?" Shan looked at Fish as if he was missing something.

"I dunno. College. I guess." Fish figured Shan would know, but it was sort of the war zone between Josie and Shan, lately.

"I'm gonna miss that guy. Cause, when I think of the library, I always think of Ian putting books away." Shan smirked as they made their way out of the library.

Fish couldn't help but smile. He thought for sure Shan would be thinking of Henry.
