it could still be the best of times

it could be

Syreeta finally woke up to the idea that maybe..maybe something was going on between Zac and Luna.

"You're not upset about that, are you?" Sawyer asked as they were sitting on the steps before school started.

Fall had finally arrived, and it suddenly felt like winter with a wet flurry or two around. Syreeta wondered if she'd lost her senses being with Sawyer all the time. It wasn't that he didn't let her think for herself, but maybe things were just so cozy that the only world that seemed to exist lately was their own.

But she'd seen Zac talking to Luna when school started. Actually, Syreeta wanted to ask then if there was more to it, yet she'd let it go. It really wasn't any of her business.

"No, I'm not." She looked at Sawyer as if he might be the one with the problem, not her.

He grinned as if he really knew what this was about.

"You and Luna used to be really close. Am I..the one ..who.."

"No." She wouldn't let him finish. "It wasn't you. She was the one who was boy crazy, not me."

She thought of how Luna used to flirt with the boys, but she wasn't that way with Zac. No, it was all so normal.

Syreeta winced as she saw them walking near. Maybe Luna and Zac were just friends. Yeah, that's all it could be.

An Unlikely trio

Luna looked at Syreeta on the steps with Sawyer. She looked back at Zac. She guessed it was official. They were going out. They hadn't exactly done that much since the Homecoming dance. He'd taken her to a movie, and he came over ever so often to watch TV at her house. It was a Friday night thing. Saturday nights were usually the afternoons of going places together. They'd gone to the zoo, and a few festivals. Of course, since neither had a job, they usually didn't spend much money. Which meant as of late, meant more thrifting and second hand CD stores.

Luna didn't mind, as long as she could spend some time with Zac.

"Why can't the four of us, do something, together?" She looked at Zac.

"The four of us? Who are you talking about?" He winced as if he wished to leave someone nameless.

"One of them lives with you." She reminded him with a smile. "And the other is my so called best friend, of course, you wouldn't know that lately." She hugged herself as if it might be all his fault even if she knew it really wasn't.

Zac rolled his eyes.

"Are you kidding? What could we possibly do?" He stopped and asked as if she was asking him to get a loan of some kind so they could go shopping.

"Well, you have that basement. We could, just.. I dunno," she shrugged. "If your band got really good, maybe we could charge at the door."

"Yeah, like that's going to happen." Zac cracked up.

"It was just an idea." She guessed she could invite them over. She'd cook. Zac had never been over for dinner.
