Sleepyhead

Sleepyhead prt.1

They'd missed the concert. Syreeta waited around most of the weekend for something to do with Clive. There was talk of a concert. Some local group she'd never heard of. She supposed she'd give it a chance. Maybe it was to show her Dad that he didn't have anything to worry about with Clive, but he worked a double shift. Which she thought he wasn't suppose to do, anyway because of his age.

Naturally, Clive was all, "Relax, its summer, they don't care and I get overtime." As soon as he said it, she did wonder if Clive was on the up and up.

After all, she did think he was a good guy. Even if he lived with a bipolar brother and parents who were always at work. She knew why the kitten was at her house. She knew he was afraid at home. And she liked being there for him, but then he'd get these ideas of going out, being at places that cost money.

Of course, he was again, telling her to relax.

"We'll just go to this house party." He shrugged as if it were no big deal. He acted as if he'd been there before.

"House Party?" She winced. She wasn't sure what to expect.

"Chill. Its not even in North O. We'll be fine." As soon as he said it, she didn't think it would be a good idea.

"We, we could just stay home, and watch a DVD." He could end up on the couch to sleep over. They could salvage the weekend without getting in to trouble, but with Clive's sheepish grin, he was thinking different.

Sleepyhead prt.2

Rossie was almost out of cigarettes. She knew she needed to quit, but they were already at the party, she'd driven herself, Nic and Jen. There was plenty of beer and the music was loud and it was dark. The house was packed with people. They were doing fine to be out in the back yard. But she was getting thirsty. She supposed she'd better get the drinks and let Nic and Jen wait outside.

She didn't expect trouble. Probably no one knew her. And besides it was dark. There was only a lame light show going on in the livingroom where people were supposed to be dancing, but she imagined they were just being stupid.

A part of her didn't want to be here. She didn't really fit in, anywhere. Maybe that was why she and Nic got along so well, but it was good to be out with Jen. They were friends again. She hoped Jen never let Caitlin back into her life.

While she was making her way to the red cups, somebody already had a steady hand on the keg. And he was stealing sips of beer. Somebody bumped into her and she pushed into his back side.

"Hey, are you trying to hump me, or what!?" He turned back to her all smug. If she'd had the beer already she would have dumped it on him. She made a face of disgust, but even in the shadows she knew who he was.

"What are you doing here, Derrick?" She winced as if he was hogging the alcohol. She knew he didn't remember her. She'd once taken him home from a party, some time last year, and dumped him on his lawn. He probably didn't remember that. Usually, he was not a bad drunk. She'd written loser on his forehead once. Well, it might not have been him. He was just some random white boy to her. But she'd had class with him back when he was just a Freshman. She could tell he had no idea who she was.

"What are you doing here?" He was on instant repeat. She had to wonder if he was already a little wasted.  She grabbed the spout, to take away from him. About that time they heard screams coming from the livingroom. Something about someone having a gun.

She grabbed a hold of his shirt and pushed him toward the backdoor in the kitchen.

"Come on!" If there was one thing Rossie knew how to do, it was to get out quick.
