a moment in time

a moment in time

"All right, you let me be the bad guy in all this."

Camille remembered how serious Duncan was about this business with Derrick.

"What do you mean?" Camille hoped Duncan didn't plan on having a fight with him.

"Sooner or later, he'll find his way home." He didn't believe Derrick was hurt or unconscious, anywhere. "And, you'll be the first person he really wants to talk too."

Camille just smiled as if Duncan had way too much faith in her. She didn't think Derrick would need her. Actually, didn't even know what she'd say to him.

But when she found Derrick in her kitchen one early morning, she made coffee while he talked.

He didn't seemed all that concerned about his job, or her, or the family....

"I think I found myself." He said without a clue as to what happened to Mitch.

"Oh, how did that happen?" Camille poured some coffee and put some canned sweet rolls on.

"I dunno." He seemed a little happy. "I stopped drinking."

"That's good." She nodded. She looked up to see Duncan at the doorway giving a little signal that he would be on the phone. Camille steadied on Derrick.

"For real this time." He was adamant about it. It was like a new and improved Derrick. "Yeah, I think I might actually be ready to start college now."

"What about Mitch?" Camille asked, thinking how peaceful the house was at this moment. The warm scent of cinnamon in the air.

"What about him?" Derrick squinted as if Mitch was just an after thought. He was nobody to him. As if he drew a blank as to who he was.

"Uh, you don't remember?" Camille looked at Derrick as if he had to be faking a memory loss.

"What?"

A knock on the door came and their conversation was cut short.  Someone read Derrick his rights while another arrested him.

For a moment, Camille was certain Derrick was someone else, or was that someone else who used to have a boyfriend named Mitch.

  1. So Derrick doesn't remember because he was drinking... it's not a good excuse... too bad he continued to drink for so long...
