in the moment

this moment

Macy hated the fact that Gage had seen his mother all on his own.

"How could this have happened?" She felt as if he'd fallen to pieces. He could hardly say anything. He looked so wounded. All apologetic.

Of course, she let him lay his head in her lap, there on her parent's sofa. She couldn't stay mad at him.

It was an old fight, anyway. She couldn't help it. She felt his trip to England was something he needed to do all on his own, and yet she knew he needed her. He did. He didn't need to be alone. Not now.

"Did you talk to your Dad? Does he know?"

Gage shook his head, no. He looked up at her as if he wanted to tell her how terrible it was, but he didn't. He looked sad, as if this was all he needed. Her. Her combing her delicate fingers through his very own lion's mane soothed him, perhaps. She wondered if he'd always wanted that from his mother. Was she just a mother figure to him?

"Why wouldn't Carson tell your Dad that your mother was here?" Macy didn't want to understand. After all, she was on Gage's side. His mother was the enemy.

"Maybe, maybe she's changed." Gage was straight lipped. "She didn't look strung out or anything."

"Gage, you..." She sighed. "You, need to tell your Dad everything she said."

He only shrugged as if it didn't matter.

"Do you want to see her again?" She couldn't think of him wanting too.

"I guess." He barely said above a whisper. "It might be my only chance." He sat up and rubbed the palms of his hands in his eyes. "If you don't want to go with me to England, I understand." He nodded. "I do..its just, I'll miss you.. so much, but I know its something I gotta do."

She nursed her bottom lip. Deep down, she was still afraid to meet Dustin, but she took Gage's hand and promised she would be there for him.
