Angie and Dewey

Angie and Dewey

"It was like a panic attack, of some kind." Angie cradled the cup of coffee, not wanting to look into Dewey's eyes.

They sat at the back booth at Oliver's. They'd both walked to meet up. Finally, she'd mustered up enough confidence, to really talk to him.

Dewey looked down at his creamed coffee.

"I was really worried." He'd been off to Iowa, recently to see his mother's brother. They hadn't been able to see each other. Perhaps, the time away would bring them closer together. "I know, I..I didn't do enough."

"You, do enough." She quickly reminded him, how good he was at first aid. Especially, that time she cut her hand, accidentally, at the farmer's market. "You're..you're really good with your hands." She pressed a smile. But she looked away as if something was bubbling in her psyche. She needed to tell him, everything.

Angie sighed. "I..I don't want to be my Mom."

"What?" He looked at her with concern.

"That..that night..all I could think of, was how..how my Mom let this guy...." She shook the thought. "She'd let him, decide everything." She pressed her lips once more, not wanting to miss her, but she actually did.

"Look, just because, they are suppose to be a grownup, doesn't..mean..they are." His gaze caught her off guard. "My mom never finds the right guy."

"I didn't want to go with my Mom and..I dunno, maybe she's married to him now. They were moving to California." She guessed her brother knew where their mom was. They still talked to each other on the phone, once a week. She didn't want to talk to her mother, she didn't want to talk about her, either. "This..this Keith, he's in college, and it sounds so cool..a college guy, but in reality..it would turn into nothing, sooner or later. I mean, he's..he's not you."

Dewey almost laughed. He reminded her of all the things he didn't have. Like a car nor a driver's license.

"That's OK, I'm getting my license soon." Even that frightened her a little. Still, she would be the driver and he seemed OK to be in the passenger seat.
