across the universe

across the universe

"What?" Blackie didn't know what Omaha was going on about. He'd taken two weeks off from work to go deer hunting out in Scotts Bluff, the west side of Nebraska. It was a cold one, with a raw wind. Still, it was good times with his Dad. "She's not home?"

He sighed, thinking she probably high-tailed it home to her parents. They lived at Red Cloud where her mother grew up.

"No. We, don't know what happened." Omaha sounded worried.

Blackie winced.

"I'm sure she's all right." Of course, he hadn't called her. He was giving her the silent treatment. They went in bouts. Sometimes, everything was a wacky cartoon. Then he might get bitter about something. Usually, he'd make her vow to never ever mention this to his family. Actually, he wouldn't let her speak to them. So she never did. Naturally, his parents thought she was a weird girl.

"But..but aren't you worried..just a little?" Omaha asked.

He didn't want to be. Why should he?

"Hey, we're out here in the middle of nowhere and a blizzard is coming." Blackie was getting testy. "Why aren't you worried about me?"

The phone went dead. That was about par for the course. Omaha, only thought about himself, or at least that was the Omaha that Blackie knew.
