Alma couldn't figure them out. What was she suppose to do? At the funeral home...hide in the shadows all day?

Emmett said she needed to dress properly. But who wanted to make up dead people in high heels? She liked living in her track suit.

Of course, there was Ellis, dressed to the nines. She felt a bit weary about these two. When was Hannah going to come and rescue her? She didn't come in, every day.

"Do you even know what casual is?" She asked Ellis in the breakroom while she was sipping on a protein shake. As soon as she heard his stomach growl, she reached in the fridge for an Atkin's drink. She lived on them.

"Its mandatory." Ellis shrugged about wearing a suit.

"Of course, it is." She nodded. At least he took the drink and opened it, but she felt as if he were a manikin of some kind. The way he moved, all stiff. "So, do you do anything fun?"

"I have this other job." He told her. "At night."

"Ha..so you're a gigolo." She let herself imagine, as she watched a smile slip on his face, but he shook his head, no.

"Its not like that." Ellis told her it was at a recording studio.

"I see." Alma was glad they could make conversation. "How do you like it?"

"I dunno. Sometimes, I'm not sure what I'm doing..and..and that boss of mine..I dunno."

"What's wrong with your boss?" Alma wanted to know.

"Oh." He half laughed. "Guess, that was an old boyfriend of his ..that stopped by last night."

"Boyfriend?" Alma cracked a smile. Now Ellis had got her interested. "Were they..making out?"

She'd embarrassed him. It was the story of her life. She hardly ever said the right thing.

  1. Alma shouldn't be so self-conscious about her words.
