it's the thought that counts

It was true, that baby of Macy's was taking a toll on Doris, but she knew Macy and Draco deserved a Honeymoon and Doris was bound to do her part. She wanted to be the grandmother she should be (even if the infant wasn't her own) but at the moment she might as well be the great-grandmother.

Everyone was busy with work. Betty couldn't get the time off. Dewey's girlfriend Angie helped a little who was now staying at the house with them. But for the most part, she was all alone with the baby.

She so needed a nap, and her arms ached. She felt so drained. It had hardly been a day.

Then Ste showed up one evening.

"I helped with the food at the wedding." He told her he was also Stephen's uncle.

It brought a smile to Doris' tired face as he took the little one from her.

He wanted to know how it was going. She was too tired to explain, but she managed to clean up the kitchen and get a few bottles ready while Ste played with him.

The baby enjoyed being in Ste's arms. She thought of Draco. Doris never remembered him that active with Lily when she was that age, but Macy said he helped out with Stephen.

He started to cry. Doris knew the happiness wouldn't last long. "He probably needs a diaper changed." Doris went to take him, but Ste said he could change the nappy. Macy showed him how.

"So, you help out with him, too?" Doris didn't know.

"Not as much as a should," Ste told her he'd be kind of out of sorts with his girlfriend. "If I hadn't been so selfish, I would help out more." He promised he would. "I dunno, if she really trusts me." He then mentioned about Macy. Maybe if Gabby was with me, it would be OK.

"Well, he's like lead." She'd stayed up all night with him. She guessed she should have stayed at Macy and Draco's.

"I could help you." He told her the baby might rest better if he was at home.

Doris did have a key to the apartment.

"You really think its a good idea?" Doris didn't want to be a nuisance.

"It'll be OK." He smiled. "If the place is a mess, I'll just help clean up."

She liked his thinking, but she knew she might be too feeble for this. "Call your girlfriend." Doris felt some grocery shopping might be in order. The thought of shopping made her smiled. She didn't want to be completely homebound.
