sharing the pie

"Aw, you're the best." Natalie's smile was open. She pinched Joon's cheek. "I can't believe you remembered." She kept staring at the pie and then him. She hugged his arm and promised him he was the best boyfriend, ever.

Honestly, she didn't mind that he hadn't wanted to rush into anything physical in their relationship. Still, they spent plenty of time kissing. She knew it was just a matter of time before it happened.

"I was thinking the whole time while I was out with Holly, what was Joon doing." She hugged him more wishing she'd spent the time with him instead of her friend.

"But you missed Holly so much." Joon smiled and shook his head.

"I guess." She shrugged, thinking Holly was too much. He pulled away and went to cut the pie. She went to get the vanilla ice cream. There was no time to worry about coffee or milk. She couldn't wait to bite into the tart rhubarb pie.

"It's just, she really does all the talking," Natalie told him when he set the slice of pie in front of her.

"That's nothing new." Joon set down at their little dining table with her but waited for her to try the pie first.

"I guess, I thought she might have changed," Natalie said as she took a bite of the warm pie. It was just as she remembered. Joon followed her grandmother's recipe precisely. She took a moment and closed her eyes to enjoy the sweet and sour taste.

She could hear Joon laughing.

"Oh, you know someone like Holly would never change." He told her she was Holly's best friend and she would always be there for her.

She took another bite. She knew he was right. Still, she wished she knew why he couldn't take this next step with her. They were so close to being just as much in love as all their friends.

"Do you think we'll ever have kids?" She asked after her third bite.

She noticed that stare of his. He could hardly swallow the bite he'd taken. He looked at her as if that was a forbidden subject.

"Yeah."He finally breathed then pressed his lips tight.

Still, she doubted it would be today.
