the beauty of it

"Don't even go there," Sid told Diago to stop before he said another word about his Char was just like Cher.

"Look, we just started..."

"You spent the night with her." Diago looked at his friend and roommate point blank. They were family now. Couldn't Sid see that Diago wanted him to be happy, but he could tell he'd already annoyed Sid.

Sid was closed mouth and even lipped. He turned away from Diago who was comparing Cher to Char. They both worked in a bakery. He flipped another sweet pancake then slid them on the plate along with some sausage links and set it down on the kitchen table for Sid. Finally, Sid sat down and started to eat.

"You'll have to invite her over." Diago thought Cher should get to know Sid's friends, who he lived with.

"Why?" Sid looked up at him as if he didn't have any intention of doing so.

"Are you ashamed of us? Is that it?" Diago squinted who went back to the skillet to make more pancakes.

Sid shook his head, no as he cleaned his plate quickly.  "It's just too soon. OK?"

Diago nodded. He thought then, what did he know. He'd never been with anyone else but Char. Not that he wanted to be with anyone else. Now he pondered, was he too easy? Was he just a simple guy? He squinted hard and shook his head.

"What's the matter?" Sid looked at him while Diago flipped another pancake.

"I guess..I've lived a sheltered life." Although, he'd never thought it that way. He'd lived with that relative or this grandparent all his days until there were no more of them. He'd never had much, but it didn't take a lot to make him happy. His education wasn't all formal. He knew he wasn't really good enough for Char, but that didn't seem to matter anymore. "Maybe, Char and I are just squirrels."

"Squirrels?" Sid winced with almost a laugh.

"I guess we are nothing more than mates for life." He didn't think they'd ever have enough money to get married.

"You two are great together," Sid nodded. "I'm glad to have friends like both of you. I want what you two have. But its something I can't just make happen. It takes time. I hope Cher will give me the time to get to know her."

Diago couldn't help but smile as he dished himself up a plate of sausage and sweet pancakes.
