missing the smell of books and other library things

Steve couldn't believe all these changes. His Dad even let him have the old car in the garage. Of course, it took a week to get it running again, but at least he did have transportation. And of course, his own place.

Naturally, everyone on staff at the library hated to see him go. There was cake and ice cream and even a gift card from Amazon.

"I dunno, if I deserved all this," he felt a little guilty leaving Simon behind like he did, but Simon's brother told him not to look back. It was best for Simon to figure this out on his own. So he didn't even look at the text that Simon sent him.

"Patrons are going to miss you," Lynsey told him. Of course, her baby bump was showing even more now. She was in her last tri-master.

"Hey, we will all miss you," another co-worker told him.

"I'll miss you guys too," Steve nodded with a smile. He was glad he'd helped here with Inter-library loan. All he would be doing at the hospital was Inter-library loan. "I didn't even know there was such a thing at the hospital." He felt so happy and yet quite teary-eyed. He'd never had so many hugs in his life. And they were of joy wishing him happiness.

A part of him hoped he found somebody like that, but he really seriously didn't think that type of love existed. Maybe he was pessimistic or too idealistic. Still, he was thankful Dan helped him like he did.

It still left him with a chuckle to think they both thought they could sleep together like they used to when they were little.

Of course, Lynsey asked one more time about her little brother Jory. She was going to miss getting the updates from him. Somehow, she never learned as much when she called him on the phone. Jory was not one to text.

Honestly, Steve never imagined to have so many friends. He was grateful to have them, and he didn't want to lose them. He promised he would keep in touch.

  2. It reminds me of a young neighbor who got a job at an hospital library. Later on, I heard she quit because of fear of bacteria and viruses, found present even among books. Sounded rather exaggerated, but who knows, the library was after all within the complex of the hospital.

    1. We have to quartine the books that come back to the library for 5 days. They are handled with rubber gloves. As of yet, so far good with the books. But I can definitely see her concern.

  12. I agree with Christine that this is bittersweet. The part where Steve is thinking that he'll never find love really struck me: "Maybe he was pessimistic or too idealistic." It's weird how being pessimistic or too idealistic can sometimes be the same thing, setting you up for failure. Very insightful and poignant! Also, I love the library-themed collage. :)
