That time you confused a lesson for a soulmate

Simon tried his best to stay balanced like his brother Xander said. Just date. Don't try to make it more than it is. Of course, that was easier said than done. Evidently, his brother left out the sex part.

A few weeks ago, he'd gotten a call from Steve (of all people) apologizing to him. But of course, Steve didn't want to get back together with Simon. After all, he was dating someone new.

"I don't mean to upset you, but I wanted you to hear it from me, and not anyone else," Steve said. "I'm sorry I let you down. I should have known it would be this way, but.."

Of course, Steve couldn't finish. Simon hung up. He didn't want to know. After all, he was in love with Declan, wasn't he? There was definitely a flame there that wasn't going to go out. Even, if he wasn't so certain about this roommate of Declan's.

"But why are you with him?" Simon made it sound as if Reese must be an old lover of some sort.

"Because he has money," Declan laughed as if this Reese must be a sugar daddy of some sort, but that wasn't really the case. He was only a year or so older than Declan.

Naturally, Simon wasn't amused with Declan's inside joke. Declan finally explained they'd been friends long before high school. "He's always looked out for me. I can't deny I don't love him."

"But?"

"But why aren't we together?" Declan only smirked. "Oh, we are as close as we will ever be."

Simon knew then there was nothing he could do to break that bond, and he honestly did feel a little hurt about it. He wasn't sure he even wanted to stick around and meet Reese that morning he was with Declan, but of course, it was too late.

Oddly, there was only one person Simon could think of when he saw Reese who was a bit more dignified than the rest. Silent and still in a suit. All the more reserved. It was as if Simon had met Declan's very own Steve.

  1. Regardless of sex preference, basic feelings are the same: love, jealousy, frustration. Simon lost Steven to a new boyfriend, and Declan, his new friend is not wholly with him because of Reese.

  7. Your-too-perfect-for-words last line says it all: "It was as if Simon had met Declan's very own Steve." So chilling. We've all got a past that messes with our present. The question is, are Steve's and Declan's pasts strong enough to steamroll what they have with each other, or are they meant to be? I honestly don't know, but then, that's because your writing's so good. You give us every side of these characters, making them all the more real and conflicted.

Thanks for your culottes comments, LOL. I didn't know that you're a teacher as well as a librarian. I'm even more impressed that you devote so much time to your writing with so much else going on.
