What friends are for

Vanna didn't want to like Slater. After all, she just wanted to get her hands on Matty. At least once this summer. But here they were sitting in the front seat together and he was asking her one question after another.

She wasn't sure how she felt about him. After all, he'd chatted her sister Alison up and they were going out. On a real date, she suspected. She looked at him out of the corner of her eye. What was this guy up to? Of course, when she looked over her shoulder and saw Izzy and Brick so excited to be together, she wanted what they were having.

At least, Slater gave her plenty of attention. He'd gotten her the biggest popcorn and drink at the theater along with any candy she might want. Honestly, she thought he was just trying to make her fat, but he ate along on his own snacks as if he was happy to escort her anywhere.

They ended up at the old diner afterward for coffee and pie. She was so stuffed, but it was nice to be with friends. She'd never felt that before. In high school, it was a competition among the mean girls. Now that was over. Funny, she didn't think it would be done so quickly, but here she was working at the grocery store having an oh-so-normal life. And she didn't even have a boyfriend.

"Why do you even need a boyfriend?" Slater told her she was going away to college. She needed some freedom to find out what she liked. He made self-love sound like the right state of mind. Of course, she wanted to tell him he didn't know what he was talking about. Naturally, she wanted to rant about how he'd talked to her sister Alison for so long. How could that have happened? Those two going out, hardly knowing each other.

"Well, you don't know me either, and here you are talking to me," Slater sighed as if he could talk all night if she wanted. Of course, she could see Brick and Izzy looked as if they could already be asleep. She knew they would have been better off on their own than stuck with her. She knew she shouldn't have plotted the Matty date. Maybe she was sort of a "mean girl" after all.

"You're going to meet a lot of people soon." His smile gave way to a serious look. "Just be wary. Keep your guard up. They don't always want what's best for you. I wouldn't worry about joining any groups. It takes time to find out what feels right to you. Be careful."

Vanna only nodded. He was the first who sounded as if he knew a thing or two about the world.

  2. Slater's advice to Vanna , in the last paragraph, is of great importance It's actually a warning: Beware of people, don't rush to join any groups. He certainly knows what he's talking about.

  4. Being aware of the people that you come in to contact with is important. You don't want to get taken advantage of. We just had a near miss with such a person. I'll share the story when my wife puts it on her blog. Have a wonderful weekend.

  6. Unfortunately, only experiences verify many friends. Fortunately, I can get to know the bad guys, because they are actually very bad under the guise of being nice.

  8. It's interesting to hear from Vanna, especially the part about friends and fitting in: " . . . it was nice to be with friends. She'd never felt that before. In high school, it was a competition among the mean girls. Now that was over." And then later, when she's thinking about her "plot" to snag Mattie, "Maybe she was sort of a "mean girl" after all." It shows that we all have two sides, that sometimes we're the hunter, sometimes the prey. Maybe that's why I like what Slater says to her and agree with Duta's comment: you have to be careful when trusting people.

  9. This chapter reminds me of those I think of as the "magical people" in our lives. You captured empathy so beautifully.
