Like a rollercoaster

It was starting to feel like a Saturday night thing with Vanna. At least Jay thought so, even if Slater smirked every time he mentioned it. Naturally, Slater had a way of making him feel self-centered, but he knew it wasn't that.

"I wish I knew what was actually going on with her," he winced yet came to expect her to invite herself over for a homecooked meal.  "Maybe, she doesn't cook."

"Well, I'm the one doing the cooking, not you." Slater reminded him as he was keeping the little kitchen spotless.

Jay rolled his eyes and gave him a sigh. Of course, it wasn't like he was ever alone with Vanna. Some of the time he thought he was babysitting her just as much as he was Hope. Naturally, it became a little social Saturday night dinner with Slater and Misty. Jay kept reminding himself that Vanna just needed friends since she talked about those in high school that she didn't think were actually friends, after all.

She did like to talk and he listened. He wouldn't dare call her a princess, but he was certain she might have been a narcissist but then who was he?

It was a sad feeling he had to fight. He combated it being that big brother that she obviously needed.

"Maybe, by fall she'll meet someone," he'd decided.

"You mean, you think she'll stop coming over then and we can just eat leftovers?" Slater shrugged.

"Oh, you know you like to have Misty over," Jay squinted about the matter. He got with their daily program of getting the Swifter out and cleaning under the couch and other dusty places. If it hadn't been for Hope they might not even bother.

"Well, I don't want to go there, she'll have me doing stuff." Slater wasn't smiling. He made it sound so tiring, like an extra part-time job.

Still, Jay knew Slater was a little sweet on Misty or it could have been the other way around. A part of Jay didn't want to lose their Saturday night dinner. Maybe Vanna wouldn't meet anyone after all and they could just be friends. He liked the idea of not thinking of sickness, nor other troubles. Yeah, it gave him the thought that he might not be such a bad guy, after all.

  7. Two guys talking about a girl. Vanna's making their Saturday night a social one, so that should please them. So far they don't seem to appreciate that much.

    1. I think they feel she is out of their league, or the thought they aren't good enough. And of course, Jay would hate to admit that he actually likes having her around.

  9. I like the idea of Jay and Vanna and Slater and Misty eating dinner together every Saturday night. It sounds cozy and like something that they all need. The bit about Vanna inviting herself over for homecooked meals is pretty funny, even if Jay is just kidding himself. It's nice how it ends on a high note: "Yeah, it gave him the thought that he might not be such a bad guy, after all." Hey, Jay, keep on believing!

I know what you mean about Hornby's leading men being kind of selfish. But I think that's why I like them! Not that I like selfish men -- oh no -- but that I identify with people who are, well, shall we say a wee bit self-absorbed? It helps that Hornby's such a good writer, funny and poignant with that British melancholy pervading everything.

On a more serious note, I was taken aback to hear about your medical troubles. That sounds very scary, and I sincerely hope that you're getting everything that you need. Take care of yourself, Ellie. The world very much needs your stories!
