How's it going

It was true, Yuki never went by Yolanda anymore. She doubted even Brandon knew her real name. But of course, Remi did.

"Hey, Yo, get over here and try this, will ya?" Remi was at the blender whipping up watermelon margaritas when Yuki got home.

"Do I  have to?" She wasn't that big of a watermelon person. It made her a little sick that Remi was making an alcoholic beverage, but here it was. Remi handed her a glass full. Yuki knew to grin and to bear with it.

They got cozy on the couch and Remi switched on her favorite songs of all times, a Marshmello mix. For somebody with such a fine job helping families with those in a memory unit, Remi did have the mind of a six-year-old, sometimes.

Yuki looked at the foamy pink drink and hesitated.

"What's wrong?" Remi put her arm behind Yuki. After all, they were the best of couples. Remi's romantic notions were of course tight. Naturally, Yuki loved her, but she was a bit stand offish on occasions like this. As if they might be drinking matches instead.

"Nothing," she guessed and looked at her drink while Remi sipped without hesitation. "It's just..Brandon's worried about Declan."

"Declan?" Remi sounded like she might be calling up the cows when she said his name. Perhaps she was already tipsy. Remi squinted hard. "What in the world for?"

"Brandon is afraid that Declan drinks too much," She watched Remi down half the pink drink. Finally, Yuki took a sip and it was much more powerful than she thought possible. She put it down and went to get the cheap tortilla chips and salsa from Aldi's.

"'What are you doing?" Remi looked at her as if she better get over here so Yuki brought the chips and a jar of hot salsa over.

Yuki stuffed chips and salsa in her mouth.

"You're gonna get sick," Remi told her.

"I'm..I'm just hungry." She nodded, wondering now if Remi drank too much. She did so much with her stressful job and taking online classes. Yuki wished she could do more than her semi-parttime job.

"Oh really?" Remi said she could have made her a veggie omelet.

"No, really...this is enough." Anything would do, but not that drink. It was a real eye-opener and Remi went on to drink the watermelon margarita and Yuki's too.

"Do you remember the first time you drank alcohol?" Yuki asked.

"Well, of course, I do." Remi smiled at Yuki. "It was a fond memory, I drank my dad's whiskey and coke when he was playing poker. I guess I was all of four." She grinned as she shook with laughter.

Yuki did her best to smile, but she thought it was kind of sad.

"When's the first time you drank alone?" She wondered out loud then.

Naturally, Remi furrowed her brow. She didn't give her an answer.

  1. Addiction to alcohol might start with a small, harmless sip. So Yuki's right to be hesitant about Remi's drinking the watermelon margarita.

  8. That made me laugh- the mind of a six year old. :) I kind of like Remi- she seems fun but Yuki clearly is a little worried about her drinkng.

  10. OK...as someone who loves watermelon, I'm having a hard time with Yuki's taste:P That was kinda funny though when she started eating chips and salsa to take out the taste:D I really do love how you built this whole world with such diverse characters, Ellie! Well done:)
Hope you have a great week ahead.

  12. I love how you carried over Yuki and Brandon's conversation about Declan's drinking into Yuki and Remi's relationship. Brandon clearly made Yuki think, and now she's hyper attuned to the truth that Remi may be self medicating. And then when Remi said that she took her first drink at four years old, it was like, whoa. That's the kind of thing that a lot of people might dismiss as cute, but it can also be indicative of a deep-rooted problem. You're so skillful in how you weave your stories together, not to mention insightful in showing how each life affects another. Well done!
