after dark

It was all good on the fourth, at least Jay thought so in the beginning. They had celebrated with Bom and her bunch. Even Dan and Ivy showed up with Hope. Slater and Omaha tended to the grilling. He'd met some new faces too, like Brandon and Declan. Yeah, it was a real party.

Jay felt as if he could be a part of that extended family even if Bom had her step-brother there with his little girl.

"It seems like everyone here has a kid." Lindy's words stung Jay. What was that supposed to mean? He didn't ask. He just opened another beer and drank.

"I don't think Declan and Brandon have any." Jay shook his head and pointed to a couple of other people. He didn't see them with any kids.

Lindy blew a breath as if she really hated being here in the stifling humidity. She told him Misty wasn't out here with Scout.

"She's an infant." Jay shrugged as if that was different. Lindy didn't say anything else to him and walked off. He thought she was going to Misty's. But an hour later when he texted Lindy, she didn't text back.

Jay did his best not to panic, he strolled over to Misty and Slater's while everyone was watching the fireworks.

Lindy was not there.  It almost took Jay's breath away.

So he ran back to tell the guys after he checked to see if she was home. She wasn't. All of this left Jay in a sweat. He felt he was staggering, but he hadn't drank that much. Even so, he wished he hadn't drank at all.

Jay frantically found Ivy, and told her it was best if Hope stayed home with her. They had to go looking for Lindy.

Lindy's purse was here. She had her phone. Only she wasn't answering. Everyone was calling her. It was as if the life of the party went dark.

  7. I like how all these various characters come together at times. And it sounds like they have the best cook outs and grill outs too, even if there's personal drama. :)

I hope you had the nice 4th!!

  10. Oh, Lindy. This is a loaded passage if ever there was one: ' "It seems like everyone here has a kid." Lindy's words stung Jay. What was that supposed to mean? He didn't ask. He just opened another beer and drank." You have a real flair for blending the funny and sad. Clearly, this observation set Lindy off -- and walking. I hope she's okay, wherever she is. And that she and Jay have a good talk.

What a wonderfully festive collage! My favorite part is "chill the fourth out." :)

That's terrible about all the COVID at the library. I don't want you to get sick either! Stay safe.
