Aftermath

"It doesn't look that bad does it?" Cade winced once more as Lily's grandmother Doris put the ice pack on his eye. Yes, going home seemed pointless at the moment.

It had been a terrible night at the Riverfest. Of course, Cade thought the music was horrible, but some might as well be doing the Riverdance jig. It wasn't like he'd asked anyone to dance. Of course, Mercer was in the midst of it with Brooklyn who lead him around like a puppy.

And of course, there was Brick with the orange-haired girl and they were just twisting and turning like Elvis with an elf.

He sighed thinking what had got into him to go down to the river. It was crowded. And loud. The corn on the cob dipped in cheese was just messy. He had a cough now from the smokey air.

"How did you get this black eye?" Doris wanted to know.

"Well." He kind of scowled. "It just came out of nowhere, you know."

Really, he thought maybe it was Brick's doing, but he'd never seen that guy in a fight. But it was that girl he was with. She kicked him right in the eye like a street fighter. She was wearing pointy-toed boots.

"Maybe, you should have it looked at," Doris told him.

"Oh, it'll be all right." He told Lily's grandmother he hadn't gone there to fight with anyone. "I just kept thinking Mercer might need me, but..but he was with that silly girl. I just can't stand her laugh." Possibly, he was being too honest, but he needed to talk to someone about Mercer. "I don't know what he sees in her."

"I'm sure it's just a summer fling," she smiled. "But how did you make that girl so mad?"

"I don't really know." Cade sighed. "Maybe I looked like somebody else. Who knows."

"What did Brick do?" She wanted to know. Doris said she'd known Brick since he was a little boy.

"Oh, he pulled her back, just not soon enough," Cade said Brick tried to get him to see a paramedic, but Cade didn't think it was that bad.

"Oh, but it is," she said. "You got blood in your eye."

  1. A black eye is never a pleasant thing. Hopefull,y the pack of ice will do its job.Cade regrets going to the Riverfest, but incidents like the one with the eye happen regardless of one\s will to participate in a fest.

  10. And so another layer of the Cade-Harley vendetta is revealed. It's fascinating that Harley has such rage toward Cade, yet he doesn't know who she is. Or does he? Cade thinking about her silly laugh and then making this observation: "And of course, there was Brick with the orange-haired girl and they were just twisting and turning like Elvis with an elf." suggest that he doesn't respect her or see her as a threat -- just an annoyance. Which explains why she felt the need to bloody his eye. There's a big story here, I can feel it . . .
