spinning through the universe

Back to school would be here soon. Although, Rafe was in no hurry. He wondered how it would be working then at the bakery. It felt as if it was coming to a grind of some kind. It was hot and the humidity made everything so gross, but here he was on the basketball court near his house playing one on one with Kevin.

Granted, he hadn't seen him all summer. It was like Kevin was a different person now. "What happened to you?" Of course, Rafe wasn't pleased to see that Kevin was taller than him (And too good-looking for his own good. Where had that nerd gone?). Kevin was taller than his brother Matty now. who was a senior in high school while Kevin was just a freshman.

"Not much," Kevin assured him. "I work weekends at the Downtown Cafe." He cleaned tables and washed dishes. Although, he had to play waiter during the breakfast rush a lot of Saturdays and Sundays. It was his first job.

"I didn't think you were old enough?" Rafe said when he took a shot after he watched Kevin ace a shot from half court with ease.

"I can't really do real part-time yet, but maybe soon." Kevin was even lipped.

"Are you sure you're up for something  like that?" Rafe grinned. He'd had enough of his summer job.

"Why not?" Kevin took the ball and dribbled a bit before he took a layup. "Are you sure that's all it is?"

"What?" Rafe didn't think he'd complained. "You're still with Dakota, aren't you?"

Kevin just chuckled. "You make it sound like we're an old married couple. I've known her since, I dunno, grade school. She's my best friend." He reminded Rafe if it hadn't been for her, no telling where he might be right now. After all, she was the one who helped him find the home he was in. It was a family of men, but he was happy to be a part of such a clan.

Rafe nodded. He'd about forgotten of Kevin's troubled past with wayward parents that had left him.

"It's amazing Lily is not still with Brick." Rafe thought out loud, wondering just how much Lily remembered her childhood friend. After all, she was Rafe's first love, but from what he saw that day at the bakery (not so long ago)...Brick was still Lily's first love.

"Oh." Kevin stopped dribbling and held the basketball. "So that's what's troubling you?"

Rafe nodded and Kevin threw him the ball hard. "He always liked adventure."

"Huh?' Was that what he and Lily needed? An adventure?

Kevin smiled at Rafe. "Dakota and I just watch a lot of TV. We study together." Kevin told him. "I'm thankful for a lot of things about her. Of course, she's my best friend. We can talk about anything."

Rafe gave him a nod, but he didn't quite understand completely what Kevin was yammering about. All he could think about was an adventure of some kind with Lily.

  6. Oh humidity - don't even mention the word!
Kevin seems to be a promising lad: tall, good-looking, working part time, playing basketball, having Dakota as best friend. Rafe, seems impressed.

  7. Guys playing b-ball and talking about girls -- love it! I've never mentioned this before, but I really enjoy how almost all of your male characters take relationships seriously. We never hear them engaging in locker room talk, and they always consider girls' feelings. That's so refreshing! Well done. 🏀💟
