Where darkness falls

It really had been a good summer with Mercer. Brooklyn didn't know she could find such happiness. It wasn't like she went around looking for wounded ducks to make happy. It was all such an accident. But now it had come to an end. Evidently.

She might have never known about Cade if it hadn't been for the Homecoming Dance. After all, Mercer was supposed to be her date. They'd planned this all the way back in August but to her dismay..Mercer was with Cade.

"What on earth were doing with Cade?" She asked weeks ago in the high school parking lot one afternoon. Although, it might have sounded more like a demand now. Oh, she'd been in a stomp after school when she heard he'd been banned from the Homecoming Dance. For once she let her true colors shine. She wasn't in that support group for epilepsy. It was for anger issues (she'd slipped out of that one because it was just a bunch of old people).

Of course, Mercer only ran from her in the parking lot that day at school, and she was left yelling, "That's right! Just run when nothing is working out for you!"

Seriously, she was in the shadows of wanting to do something wrong. Especially, to herself. She hadn't felt this low in some time. But then again, she didn't like being by herself. She really could be a sad sod. And then Trent from her old school called. She still wondered how that happened. It was like somebody was watching out for her, but who?

"Whatcha doing?" He'd asked. Of course, she didn't want to play along. She told him she needed a date for homecoming.

Of course, they really didn't like each other very much. Although, she could see now that he did remind her a lot of Mercer which made the ploy all the more enticing. Really, she didn't know if she was a drama queen or just a semi-devil.

Yes, once upon a time she'd had a crush on Trent who seemed angelic at the time, but he really wasn't. He was aggressive but still got good grades.

That night she made him seem the best. On the dance floor, with her friends, hoping it all would get back to Mercer who evidently had no mercy.

Of course, being alone with Trent was a different story. If only he could be more like Mercer. Yet, she wished Mercer had been a little more like Trent.

  1. It was good to get some insight on Brooklyn, especially on the heels of Cade and Mercer becoming an item. I like how at first it's funny, in a tongue-in-cheek way: "She wasn't in that support group for epilepsy. It was for anger issues (she'd slipped out of that one because it was just a bunch of old people)." But then everything turns serious when we learn that Brooklyn might hurt herself. Suddenly, escaping from an anger management group full of oldsters isn't so hilarious. It's good that she goes to the dance with Trent. But (as always!) the last words are haunting, dangling us over the edge: "Of course, being alone with Trent was a different story. If only he could be more like Mercer. Yet, she wished Mercer had been a little more like Trent." Very, very interesting!

  11. Aww poor Brooklyn. Struggling wih Mercer and now Trent. I hope she's not using him just for the dance, but sounds like she did have a thing for him at one time. It can be so confusing when you're torn
