just friends

Zac was glad he took Syreeta to the dance. For once, he did feel as if he were part of the crowd. He couldn't explain it. Perhaps, it had to do that it was so easy to play the part.

Of course, he wasn't certain if this were a good thing or a bad thing. But he was going out with a girl,  a beautiful girl, who was so talented and his best friend's little sister.

He couldn't forget that.

Yet, he'd never been this kind of guy before and he kind of liked it. There was nothing on the sly, and yet it wasn't quite real, either.

But Syreeta's friend seemed to notice. Luna asked if they wanted to come to the all night diner with them, and they did. Of course, he was shocked to see a senior out with them. Wasn't he suppose to be an important football player calling all the shots?

He turned out to be Luna's cuddle bear. He could only hope Syreeta didn't come up with any nick names for him. Instead she looked at him, finding it all a laugh. Unexpectedly, Luna already had them set on a double date next weekend.

"How did that happen?" Zac was thinking this was going to be a one time deal. "I dunno, if I can keep this up. We. We really have to be serious about our band." He said once they were back in her driveway.

"You, really think I can help your band?" Syreeta looked at him out of the corner of her eye.

"Yeah, of course I do. You really know what you're doing." He nodded as if she might be his partner in music.

"So, you don't want to go out with me?" She sounded so hurt.

"Well, of course..we..can ..do that." He shrugged. "But we can do the music, too." He was certain he could keep it all straight. "We're friends, OK. Just friends." As long as he felt that way about her, everything was going to be OK.
