Dean listened to Josie explain all about Daisy and Max.
They were in the prop room after school.
Josie was dressing down lately. She was in her skinny jeans and purple Chuck Taylors. Still, she looked quite fetching in her flirty floral top.
"I thought they were so in love. I mean, I thought it would last forever and then they broke up." Josie sighed as she was going through some of the props. She was pulling plastic flowers apart. She almost bonked him with a fat sunflower.
"I can't believe they're having a baby. I mean, he's been with Sara like..I dunno how long. I thought that was perfect. And then this happens." She shrugged.
Dean went to get her a box to put sunflowers in.
"But, everything else is going OK, right?" He asked. She was so straight lipped. He couldn't imagine Max and Daisy being the only thing on her mind.
"Its fine." But he knew when she said it, nothing could be farther from the truth.
"What happened?" It couldn't be about the play. She was here, even if she'd threaten to quit. This hadn't been what she'd signed up for.
"Roman Hardy doesn't go out with girls like me." She swallowed back, giving him a dead stare.
"I had no idea." Dean bit a grin, but then soon lost it.
She was serious. Was he just backup? After all?
"I had a baby..last year." She could barely manage to say as she broke down. "And.."
He put his arms around her, as if wasn't all bad. He knew. It was talk around school. He never brought it up. It was none of his business.
"But the baby has a home." He told her as he pulled a strand of her long tresses behind her ear. "You, didn't do anything wrong."
She sniffed back tears as she looked up at him.
"I like you, just the way you are. Whatever they're saying about you, is just stupid, OK. They're like a bunch a sheep. Can't decide anything for themselves." He told her. "If you want to quit this play, I'd understand. You don't have to put yourself through this."
She shook her head, no. He embraced her once more and kissed the top of her head. Dean most definitely wanted to be here for her.
Sometimes..we like to dwell on other people's problems instead of our own.
