Gabby diligently grated the white cheese. It was rather therapeutic to make the vegetarian lasagna with her mother. Maybe, this was all she needed. Learning to cook with her mother.
Still, she couldn't help but think what a rotten Christmas it had been. Ste stayed home. He said he was sick. He didn't sound sick on the phone, even with a cough. She was sure it was something else. But he was cold and wanted nothing to do with her. Not even a Christmas present.
Even a week later, it was still the same. What was wrong with him? Why was he like this?
Sure, there had been a lot of merriment to be had. Macy and the baby made Christmas, evidently.
Then, she wondered about Ollie.
Was that all it was? He wasn't c i r c u m c i s e d. There had to be more to the story.
"Is..is Steven..c i r c u m c i s e d?" She asked about Macy's baby. She knew he was. Why did she do things like this?
"Uh, yeah." Her mother chuckles as she was getting the fixings for the lasagna ready at the stove. Thankfully, she didn't ask why Gabby wanted to know. "My husband..your father, didn't have it done until he was in the army."
Gabby's eyes tensed. It would be like a major surgery now for Ollie.
She felt a little faint. She knew she should be thinking of Ste, but she wasn't. No, it was Ollie she felt sad about it.
After all, he was her best friend. Of course, she couldn't imagine when it happened.
Here she was..wanting to use him. He was like..her backup.
Maybe..he knew this. Maybe that's why he didn't want ...
She winced hard. Thinking how..how could Ollie love someone like that? Like he loved Ivy?
She couldn't love Ste, so unrequited.
Suddenly, she felt hopeless. She almost tossed the white cheese in the trash.
"Hey!" Her mom awoke her thoughts. "What are you doing?"
"Oh..sorry." She swelled a frown. If only Ste would call. Why hadn't he called?
