Matty didn't want to need Sunny. Still, he didn't want to worry Xander too. He was afraid Xander might take another semester off, and he might never be a real nurse.
"It'll be OK," Xander promised. He was only going to take one class. "I want you to have a good school year."
Matty didn't see that happening, but one of his teachers did figure out he was good at math. Of course, he found this baffling.
Sunny thought he was bluffing.
"You're probably a genius." Sunny was playful around him and did make him feel he was one of the family. Maybe Sunny did care about him, but he had a girlfriend and friends.
Matty could only watch. He didn't think he was capable of having friends, and then one day Dakota came over.
Ugh, instantly, he was certain the little girl was crushing him. Her smiles made him a bit on edge. Before he knew it, she was introducing him to Brick down the street.
Naturally, she informed Brick. "Don't let anything bad happen to him this year."
Matty looked a little worried, but Brick only chuckled.
"She'll beat me up, if I don't." He smiled. Matty did his beest to grit a smile. This was not the way he'd expected to gain a friend, but he guess he needed all the help he could get.
