a cold winter's morning
"His parents probably found out he's gay," Diago told her this last night when they went to bed, about Micah's situation.
Char kind of listened. Actually, her head hurt from all the coughing and Diago gave her some concoction that put her to sleep so she didn't think much of what Diago said. Yet, the next morning when she was better and trying to get Micah to eat some oatmeal, she thought Diago might be wrong about him.
True, Micah did like a clean kitchen and did get some order in the living room where he'd stayed.
"You, don't have to do this." She told him when she saw him washing the pots and pans that Diago left in the sink.
"It's OK," Micah shrugged. "It takes my mind off things." He went on with rinsing a pot.
"Did something happen?" Char asked.
Micah remained mute as if he might be deaf too. She warmed up the instant oatmeal in the microwave and set some hot coffee out for him.
He looked out the window. Snow was falling softly, yet the wind was bitter. Char shivered. Micah looked back at her as if what the point of even trying to have breakfast. He sighed.
She waited for him but took a sip of coffee.
"Is it true, you got kicked out, at home?" She asked.
He wouldn't look at her but he took a sip of the black coffee, then stuck a spoon in the warm oatmeal, and finally took a spoonful.
"Look, I'll get going." He scooted his kitchen chair back.
"No," Char reached for him. "Stay. I just want to know what's going on."
When he looked at her, she knew he was sad, even depressed. He looked as if he might be coming down with something too.
"I don't know what to say," He finally spoke, but his words were raw.
"I just..I just don't want you to get hurt," she winced, but there were tears already in his eyes.
"No one's hurt me." Micah remained straight lipped. "I'm..I'm the one who hurts ... everyone."
