what became of us
Rosie figured it was a phone call past due, but one night she got the courage to call somebody from the past. It was her last hope to touch base with family.
"Well, I hate to tell you this, but it's not much better on my end, either," Jai reminded her they hadn't been in contact for ages, not since their parents divorced.
Rosie held her breath for a moment, perhaps calling her so called step-brother was the wrong thing to do. She hadn't seen him in so long and yet she yearned to know who he was now. She doubted she knew what he looked like. Jai was on his own and he hadn't heard from his mom.
"She got in a bad way," he told her it was easy to get back in bad habits. He lived in a homeless shelter for a while. Actually, he was working an apprenticeship now. He was an electrician.
"An electrician?" Rosie squinted thinking of her own dad who'd worked long and hard at that sort of life and it didn't keep him from opioids.
"Look, I've got some days off coming. I'll fly down and see you." He could get a direct flight at O'Hare. It was cheaper than driving. "We'll hang out and you'll probably want me to go home in a couple of hours."
He was still happy go lucky Jai. She'd missed him. It would be nice to reconnect. She'd remembered a time when she'd promised herself she'd marry him someday, but then they became step-siblings. If only she could have reached out to him sooner. Perhaps all was not lost, after all.
