if you could read my mind

Micah was beginning to feel left out. It seemed everybody knew Iona at the grocery store. Oh, she was such a wonderful cashier and making friends fast.

Micah didn't think he envied her. He didn't see much of her lately. She was never home when he was home these days. You'd never know they even shared the same room.

"Well, is it me?" He asked Diago. "You don't think-"

"Think what?" Naturally, Diago didn't even have time for him these days busy with his own family.

"I don't know," and he didn't. He felt lost. He hoped that feeling would go away with Iona around, but it felt as if she was avoiding him. "I thought..we were friends."

"She has a lot of friends." Diago nodded as if he knew this much.

"But, but she's avoiding me." And it hurt. Because he was certain he needed someone like her in his life right now.

"She seems to think she's intruding, you know. Not just you, but for us as well. She's had a hard time, too. I think all she wants right now is to have a job, be able to get out on her own. This is just temporary." He sounded as if this was her style. As if he didn't count on her being around long.

Micah hated this feeling. He was sure he was falling into something with Iona. But he didn't know how to tell her. He'd never really been good at relationships.
