some kind of wonderful

Alfie brought home donuts. He knew Poppy liked the apple cinnamon ones, especially this time of year.

He was trying to remember to do all the things Steve told him to do if he wanted to be a good roommate. Alfie picked up after himself. He vacuumed. He even bought groceries.

He'd left a list on the fridge and told Poppy if she needed anything he'd pick it up, but she hadn't.

"What's wrong?" He finally asked. It was Saturday and he'd decided maybe he should cook so they could have something to warm up through the week, but he wasn't sure how she felt about that. She was keeping her distance. "Did I do something wrong?"

She shook her head, no. But Alfie didn't believe her.

"You never talk anymore," He almost laughed.

Poppy didn't give him an answer.

"You're sure you're not mad at me?" Alfie winced thinking the worst. What if Steve told her about Melissa and her roommate?  It was a one-time ordeal. Alfie learned his lesson. No way would he ever think of having a one-nighter with Poppy.

"I thought we were friends," he hoped he didn't make her feel uncomfortable.

She cleared her throat and said, "I know." Although, she still looked hurt.

"Let's have donuts and coffee," It might have been almost afternoon but if he made the coffee strong enough, it would keep them going all day. "Just imagine how much studying we can get done."

She only nodded.

"You know, you can tell me anything," he told her.

She nodded. He went to put on the coffee. Maybe if he wasn't in the same room with her, she would talk. And she did.

She reminded him the movie theater was now open.

"Do  you want to go?" Alfie asked. when he looked at her it was as if he'd asked the wrong question. "Look, Simon and Steve went out last night, and they seemed to think it's really safe. Lots of sanitary measures in place. And they both really loved that new mutant movie."

"Well, if..if you've got time," she started.

"Sure, we could do it, later today," he got on his phone and checked the movie times. He wondered if a late matinee would be OK.

"Sure," she sounded a little comfortable now. He purchased the tickets on his Android.

"You'll have to drive," he didn't have a driver's license. She smiled as if she knew she came in handy for that sort of thing.
