Chances are

Chance was worried. Wondering what to do about Casey.

Thanksgiving came and went. His family had spent Thanksgiving with Rosie's family. There were plenty of children to keep his mother happy. Even he saw his father smile. Sure, they wondered what was going on with Lynsey and Casey. Naturally, they didn't call, but Chance had lied and said the baby was sick.

His mother wanted to know what she could do.

"It might be the norovirus," Chance hadn't meant to make her nervous, but of course, his parents didn't want that and soon went home after Thanksgiving dinner was done.

"But why did you lie to them?" Rosie wanted to know later when they were back home snacking on left over goodies and having hot chocolate.

"I don't mean to be a natural born liar, but when it comes to Casey I know..they wouldn't want to hear the truth. They don't even know what to do for him," Chance sighed.

"What's wrong with him?" Rosie wanted to know as they cuddled on the only couch they had in their tiny house livingroom.

"Oh, he's never been the same since his best friend killed himself," Chance told her. "It wasn't his fault. Exactly. Even though, he thinks it is."

"It must have really-" Rosie shook her head, trying to figure Chance's brother out.

"Oh, and his name was Linsey too." Chance looked at her blankly. "Go figure that one."

"But why would he kill himself?" Rosie winced, thinking maybe it was an illusion of some kind.

"Well, his friend was gay and..and obviously, Casey isn't." He shrugged. Chance said he felt so distant from the situation now. He wished Casey would talk about it. "I don't even know that's the real issue anymore, but..but I remember Casey talking to him. Like he could see him."

"Like a ghost?"

"Maybe." Chance just wanted to finish his hot chocolate. But he knew he needed to find out what was going on from Lynsey.

    1. Oh, I'm sorry to hear about your father. Thank you so much for your comment. It is always great mystery to us. Wondering what we could have done if we knew, or if the circumstances had changed. Thanks again for your very poignant comment.

  12. Really a tough situation! Realy very sad chapter! Infact, life begins with the sunrise in everyday. We have many reasons to go on our unique lives. But suicide is really an inhumanly behaviour.

  15. Whoa. So, the root of Casey's depression is that his friend, whose name was Linsey, the same as his girlfriend's, committed suicide? I didn't see that one coming. Casey's issues go far deeper than I ever imagined; he shouldn't go through this alone and needs to talk to a professional. I can't help but wonder how Lynsey will feel when she finds out -- I'm assuming she doesn't know -- especially the part about her sharing Casey's friend's name. Ellie, you have a gift for writing about difficult topics with great insight and sensitivity. As some of the comments already show, that goes a long way in connecting with and helping your readers.

On a much lighter note, thank you so much for including my roses and purple sweater fabric in the collage! Seeing them made me smile. You're the best!! :)
