You looked alright before

"She's gone Goth," Harley said as she kept staring at Brooklyn in the long line to the hayride at the Pumpkin Patch.

"What?" Both Brick and Mercer looked at her as if she was weird. Harley pointed. Neither knew it was Brooklyn.

Cade brought over the cotton candy for Mercer. They were in matching hoodies as if they might be a couple.

Brick offered Harley the honey-roasted nuts he bought but she pushed them away. Really, she only ate unsalted peanuts with a few pretzels. She was trying so hard to be a good girl when it came to sugar. Although, she did like eating chocolate ice cream at two in the morning. It wasn't something she did every night. Just occasionally. Usually, she gave herself some insulin afterward. No one told her not to and it helped with her blood sugar. But this wasn't about her.

"What should we do?" Cade asked after he figured out who they were talking about.

"What can we do?" Harley looked at him. She knew he wasn't going to give up his boyfriend for Brooklyn. "She's got somebody."

"How do you know this stuff?" Brick looked at her as if she was supposed to stay Kawaii soft all the time.

"I have eyes," she told him. She crunched on one of her nuts and pretzel. "Well, we should go over and say hi." She then proceeded.

"We can't cut in line!" Brick yelled.

"I never wanted to go on the hayride, anyway." She looked back at them.

"We are going on this hayride," Brick told Mercer and Cade. About then Lily and Rafe showed up. She had hay in her hair. There was some in Rafe's shirt.

"Did you guys go on the hayride?" Cade asked. They both shook their head, no. "Then what have you two been doing?"

They both laughed and said they were having fun. They were on their way to have hot chocolate and Apple Jack doughnuts.

"Where's Harley?" Lily then asked as if maybe they left her at home.

"Talking to Brooklyn," Brick said. "It seems she wants us to keep an eye on her."

"Why?" Lily wanted to know.

"All I know, she doesn't like that guy she's with." Brick shrugged as if he hoped Harley got back in line.

"But he looks like Mercer," Lily smirked. "He can't be that bad."

Mercer ate his pink cotton candy. Cade put his arm around him as if he was only here to protect him, maybe from Brooklyn's new boyfriend.

  1. Harley is my kind of girl: tries to keep away from sugar and salt. It's hard, but rewarding.

  10. Hmm. I agree with Harley that something's going on with Brooklyn. A sudden and drastic change in appearance, especially linked to a new love interest, can sometimes spell trouble. On the other hand, I'm glad to see Cade and Mercer settling in together.
