Mercer was worried. Why were they going with Link? It was dark. All they had was the moonlight to help them along the way in the old field of dirt and dried pumpkin leaves. He got out his phone, but it didn't have much of a battery life. It seemed to take forever.
There was no truck and trailer. He winced hard. "What the hell?" He said.
There was music coming from a barn. And soon enough they got to the party. It was some of Link's friends all right. But he didn't remember any of them working at the pumpkin patch. His friend Brandon had a table of warm snacks and his boyfriend Declan was a DJ who had the place thumping with dance music.
He felt a little dizzy. This was the last thing he expected. A Halloween party.
Oh, there was laughter soon enough. Everyone was there. Even Brooklyn and that guy Trent. Of course, Merce thought he might be nauseous.
"What's wrong?" Cade asked. Mercer hated to be a downer. He knew he needed to be somebody's boyfriend.
"Not a thing," he shook his head. "Let's dance." Everyone else was. Brick was with Harley and just to his back was Izzy and she was moving to the music with Link. It was all so surprising.
A part of him felt he was tight now in his circle of friends. He wasn't an outsider. Everyone was getting along. Even more of Brandon's friends came.
He laughed then. Was that Vanna? The last person he ever expected to be at the same party as himself. Funny, he was kind of her date once upon a Halloween. That felt like ancient history now. But she was happy with her boyfriend.
Mercer smiled more. Yes, maybe he'd grown a lot since then. Maybe. Yet, he knew he needed to be a better friend. Oh, he'd listened to a lot. He really didn't have that much to say. And when he looked at Cade, he knew he had less to say than he did.
Mercer sighed. Yes, he was right where he wanted to be. Although, they weren't any better at this dancing than anyone else here.
i love dancing:D

ReplyDeleteNice. Fun party, and Super Vanna showed up. lol.
ReplyDeletePersonal growth -- and a party! -- for Mercer. I like it! That last line about him and Cade not being any better at dancing than anyone else speaks volumes. You know. About how all of us are worried about how we look dancing through life even though everyone else is worried about themselves and don't know what they're doing anyway. Ellie, you're so very wise. 🎃
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun at the party.
