The cashier looked as if she might be frantic about something. Zoey had only asked where to find the diapers. She had no idea they'd be at the back of the drugstore. Instead, the girl just pointed to the guy in the shirt with the drugstore logo.
"He can help you," she pointed. There was no one behind Zoey, but she went to the dark-haired guy who was walking toward her.
"I need diapers," she said.
"Diapers?" He gave the cashier a look as if she was not supposed to point to him as a guide of some kind. But he got in customer service mode and lead the way, talking constantly about the kind of disposable diapers available.
Zoey nodded. Of course, there were too many to choose from. She thought Dan might need diapers for the baby. It was the least she could do. It was hard to know what to buy. Now that she was his neighbor. She nursed her bottom lip as she picked up other little items thinking it might be best to get a basket of goodies. But it was a lot more expensive than she imagined.
"How old is the baby?"
"I'm not really sure," she'd never thought to ask. She just wasn't into knowing this kind of stuff.
"Well, my friend just had a baby and it's still a newborn," he nodded. She nodded, thinking that would be the way to go. She touched the one for the smallest, but then changed her mind. Zoey wasn't sure.
"I'm sure if you just get soaps, shampoo and baby wipes would be just as good for a gift," he showed her some onzies that were cute and basically white. She sighed as if this was all too much. It might give her a headache.
"What are you doing," someone then said behind her. Zoey practically jumped and bumped into the drugstore guy's shoulder who was trying to help her. Zoey looked back. It was Dan and he was alone.
"Huh, so this is where you work, Alfie?" He was straight-lipped.
"Yes, Alfie," Zoey laughed softly taking him by the arm. "He's helping me." She grinned back at him.
Dan almost smiled. Alfie just said it had been a while and asked if he'd heard from Steve, but Dan said no. He walked on toward the pharmacy.
"You know him?" She looked at Alfie.
"Um, he's a friend of a friend. I can't say we are real friends." Alfie told her.
"I used to know him back in school," she said. "You know, he's a new Dad."
"Oh."
"Maybe-"
"Maybe what?" Alfie looked at her blankly.
"Maybe you could..um.." Zoey shook her head, no. She never asked anyone out. Never. But suddenly she felt more bold, even with Dan still looking back at her from the pharmacy.
"What? Go out?"
"Sure." Zoey nodded.
Alfie only smiled as if he could follow her lead. He put his arm around her as if they'd been more than acquaintances for some time now. "I think we can be good friends." He whispered in her ear.
Oh, an interesting situation.

DeleteAlfie and Zoey, huh? Nice! And something I didn't see coming. Also, Zoey is so sweet to get the baby gift. I think she may be good for Alfie.
