Last chances in the smallest places

When Declan and Brandon showed up, Remi really wanted to slam the door in their face, but they brought food and she was hungry. She didn't even ask how they found her at the trailer park. Naturally, Brandon said he could help fix the place up. At least he unclogged the sink and checked the bathroom. They didn't say a word about Yuki. Remi didn't say much either. Of course, THANK YOU was not in her vocabulary either. She knew they both didn't think she'd changed, but she was certain she was on a better road, maybe to recovery. If she could say that much. Still, it felt a little too late. She knew who's side they were on and she hugged herself hard waiting for them to leave.

Damn, if an hour later, she thought they were back on this cloudy but cold afternoon. If only she'd been working. But it was someone else. He said the place was his. He was the owner's son. He'd came down from Sioux City. Evidently, he was Lakota Sioux too.

"Then why are you hear? Don't they have nice apartments up there on the Rez?" She shot back. There were some lease papers around here. She'd been paying the rent. It was within her budget. After all, most were old people here. She felt safe. Everyone stayed in their space. It wasn't like it was a luxury hotel.

"But, but it's mine," he claimed. He stood there outside the trailer.

"Who are you again?" She wanted to call someone. But he was already calling someone. He said his name was Wolf, but he looked more like a mutt to her.

He said he was going to call the cops.

"Don't do that," she knew arguing would not work with this dude who looked way out of his element. "I don't need any cops, OK."

So she let him in and warmed up what Brandan had made. Maybe he was hungry too. He talked about how he got lost for a couple of days. He really didn't like Nebraska all that much. She hated to tell him she'd never had a problem with Omaha, it was Council Bluffs that got her lost. But it was just a truck-driving town, anyway.

"Look, none of your relatives ever mentioned you," Remi glared at him and wondered how they could make this work. He said he had a job at Two Men and a Truck. She thought maybe he was still lost. Maybe it was the place next door or across the street. Couldn't he bother anybody else?

Remi wanted to come unglued, but the meds made her quite lazy and she hadn't any strength to go through with it.

"You can stay, but I have to stay too." She sighed. Damn, how she hated to give up her bed, but she guessed she could sleep in the window seat.

  2. Weird. You let someone you don't know come in, feed him, give him your bed just because he says it's his? She's paying rent, get the person you're paying rent to on the phone.

  3. She needs someone to help check out this person's story.

  4. You have to take into consideration, Remi has been in trouble with the law. It probably wasn't easy for her to find a place. At the moment, she just doesn't want to cause trouble. Nor does she want to be out on the street, either.

  5. Hmm. Lots going on with Remi! Sure, it's weird that Wolf just showed up to squat in her trailer. But also, I think it might be good for her to have a distraction as she gets her bearings. After a big life change, sometimes it's nice to be able to start fresh with someone who can get to know you through their own lens.

Also, thanks for sending the link to where Gage got his start. I enjoyed reading Vada's story about hitting him in his "special place" for trying to kiss her. Ah, youth!
