"You really crack me up," Chili had laughed so hard. Axton didn't know she could laugh like that.
"Well, what is he, to you, your work husband?" He asked about Dory. After all, he did know someone who had it bad for the dude.
"Something like that," she was practically mute on the subject. "It's just most come and go. Nobody stays that long at the coffee shop." She sighed as if Dory needed to go. Living there was temporary. "I just hate to think what things will be like when he leaves." She said she wanted to secure his job. They needed someone good with numbers.
"Numbers?" Axton hated the thought of that. He hated math. "What's his secret?"
"Oh, he's a musician. Maybe mathematics is secretly his thing," she sighed. She said he was a lot smarter than she would ever be.
"Why are you saying that?" Maybe he'd pestered her about it, but he didn't believe it.
"I'm not that good at problem-solving." Chili wasn't smiling. He always wanted to see her smile. It was so sweet and endearing.
"Hey, what kind of problems you got, huh?" He wanted to know. They'd set on the steps next to the building where her place was. She did not invite him in and that was OK.
She laughed then, but it might have been out of pain and regret. "It's nothing really, not like your kind of problem."
Chili hadn't mentioned anything about Em before. Especially about, how was he really handling the situation.
"I know it was foolish." He was genuine about speaking of it. He gave her a nod. "I should have known we would have never been right from the start, you know.."
Chili nodded.
"Ain't no way we'll ever be actually together together, but if I can give her the security of not worrying about the baby, then..well, I can be family too." He sounded so confident then, but now as he lay in his lair of the basement..maybe..maybe he should move out.
It wasn't perfect, but tolerable. Naturally, Em made him breakfast. Like it was the least she could do. She did know his favorites. Crispy bacon. Eggs over easy. Yeah, he wasn't going anywhere. She made him lunch to take to work. Of course, he got a text on the way out. Chili said she had a coffee waiting for him at the Coffee Shop.
Hello!! a really good chapter.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!!
I like it when a chapter opens with people laughing. Laughter can somehow set the chapter in an optimistic mode.
ReplyDeleteChilli told Axton that Dory (the musician) is good at numbers and at solving problems, and so he's valuable for the coffee shop and to her.
sound happy story.....

Axton's got it made in the food department, what with Emily cooking him breakfast and lunch and Chili getting him coffee! Seriously, though, Axton seems more multidimensional here than ever before. The fact that he even thinks about moving out of Em's basement suggests he's matured. And then there's that bond he's forming with Chili . . . ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฎ☕๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฎ☕
ReplyDeleteI think I'm finally ready for fall! Or at least for the pumpkin pie. ๐๐ฅง๐๐ฅง๐๐ฅง
