KC couldn't help it. He had to take over with the sound system. Ruby, who had had more classes than he did in recording didn't know what she was doing. Besides, the recording studio wasn't exactly state-of-the-art. But he knew what to do. He'd watched his dad's friends back before he was even in middle school at the sound recording studio where his dad once played when the music scene hadn't gone to Benson, where all the happening artists in the area went these days. He thought most of the equipment was from that old recording studio at Saddle Creek.
Of course, it didn't sit well with Ruby when he took over. He hadn't meant for it to happen, but he wanted the best for Millie's EP.
Ruby called her boss and he came in as if KC was going to be in big trouble, but before her boss knew it, he liked what he was listening to, even if KC felt he was doing double time, laying down tracks for Millie to sing too.
"Do you think you could handle this recording studio?" Stan was so serious. KC couldn't help but smile. He told him who he had learned from, and he was supposed to go back to Arizona to take more classes, but he wasn't sure if it was what he wanted.
"I mean, this guy I met there who was graduating, basically sets up and does DJ work for weddings and graduation parties." He told Stan that wasn't what he'd signed up. He wanted to work in a recording studio. "I learned a lot from those guys growing up. Most are retired now or moved away."
"Well, you've got a job here, if you want it," Stan shrugged with a smile.
"Really?" KC cracked up.
"Maybe you could teach Ruby a thing or two. I mean, she's great being a receptionist, scheduling and all that. It's lot to ask to be doing this studio too. It would be great if we could offer more to local artists." Stan went on to say there was even an apartment upstairs that was empty.
KC felt as if he'd won the lottery. Oh, he could have danced in the streets, but he politely signed on and took the keys for the apartment.
"Look at you," Millie was happy for him as they left the place. "You're gonna stay after all."
KC winced hard with a sigh. "Well, there is a catch."
"A catch?" Millie didn't know.
"Um, I'll have to work with my ex."
KC slightly cringed. "I don't think she'll like it."
"Do you wish you two were still together?" Millie wanted to know later when she bought him a burger at the coffee shop to celebrate.
"Honestly, I haven't even thought about her," KC felt indifferent about that matter.
"That probably hurts the most," Millie told him. "But she doesn't know."
"Oh, she knows."
He bit into a fry in thought. Really, he felt he'd been in a whirlwind, but he got back to business with Millie and her EP. "You sounded great, you know. I'm glad I was there to hear it."
"I don't know if it's merch anyone will even buy," she didn't sound too optimistic.
"When are you going to start being a rockstar?" He smiled as he was getting ready to enjoy that burger while she played around with her patty melt.
"Maybe someday, but I'm pretty far off from that happening," she reminded him that her sister and her girlfriend were now living in New York City. "I can't ever see myself going that far."
"Well, I like it here," KC told her after a couple of bites of the thick burger. "I hated Arizona. It was just different. I guess I missed everyone here."
"And now you have your own place," she smiled.
"Yeah, why don't you come see it after we're done," KC still couldn't believe it. He had the key and didn't know what he'd need to live there. It wasn't exactly free. He'd still be spending most of his evenings at the bowling alley.
