Vanna wasn't going to answer the phone when it rang. She was busy with True, but of course, she took a glance and recognized a name. Well sort of, maybe. It gave her a wince, but it wouldn't stop ringing.
Didn't Maisy know a Cade, she thought. She wondered what he would want. Then suddenly it occurred to her that he might have news about Maisy. She looked back at True lying in his crib looking at his mobile of bears. He was chilling with the chime of Danny's Song.
"Hullo?" Vanna answered.
There was a silence. She hesitated to hang up and said Hullo again.
"Vanna?"
Vanna was in shock. She knew that voice.
"Oh My God, it's you!" She was thrilled. "Where are you?" She danced around the baby's room in her loose shirt and comfy jogging pants.
"Oh, I ..I just want to talk." Her voice sounded mysterious. Or was she sad?
"OK." Vanna breathed in a smile and got settled in her and True's favorite chair. "What's.. what's up." She winced wondering if she should have said something else, but she knew she had to be patient.
"Not a lot."
"Really?" Vanna didn't want to jump in and say. "I know you had a baby and Harry says it's not his." She held her tongue. She wanted to hear Maisy's side of the story.
"Tell me about you? How are you and Koda? Are you happy being a momma?" Even if Vanna knew Maisy was trying to be happy and full of laughter, she knew she was crying and Vanna began to sniff back tears too.
"Yes," Vanna felt she was choking for air. "He's, he is so big." She blubber. "I'm glad he's so big, you know. I don't know what I would have done with a tiny baby. I..I probably would have been scared of it."
"No, you wouldn't have. I don't believe that," Maisy told her.
"Oh, Maisy, I miss you so much," Vanna said. "I know I was the worst friend in the world."
"You were not."
Vanna could hear her coughing back tears.
"Oh, I was never the kind of friend Cade was. I know how much you enjoyed his company, even if he had a boyfriend," Vanna remembered.
"But..but-" Maisy cleared her throat.
"Listen, Koda found out from Harry..that..that..he knows you're back."
There was a silence then.
"You're with Cade, aren't you?" Vanna asked.
"You know?"
"Harry's with Mali now, and I think they are good. Seem to be," Vanna told her Harry's girl was a nurse and she was friends with Mali.
"I see."
"But..but I want to see you. Please let me see you. Please let me help you," Vanna said she could tell her everything. "You don't have to do it right now. Just..just let me see you."
"Cade doesn't even want his parents to know he's even back," Maisy sounded as if she couldn't tell her where she was living.
"I don't even know them. I want to see you," Vanna said. "What if I came without Koda?"
Maisy liked that idea. She told her they lived in North O. Of course, that was like telling Vanna they'd moved to the North Pole even if North Omaha was about fifteen minutes down the freeway.
What a wonderfully moving piece of writing! I knew that friendship was strong enough to survive! xxx
ReplyDeleteI think that when you expect too much from a relationship, when only one side is encouraging, the bonds of affection break.
