She takes me away to that special place

 

"It wasn't that bad seeing your brother Cade again, was it?" KC wished Rafe wouldn't be so angry, seeing Cade with a baby already. It was like an endless race with those two. 

"I know I should shut up about it. I want to. I really do. But-" he sighed, trying to help KC change the oil in his old car out in the apartment complex next to the dumpster. "But did he have to keep it a secret?"

Rafe shook his head as if he didn't understand this with Maisy.

"He'll tell you when he's ready," KC squinted in the sun. The hot wind was kicking in, as it blew his hair about. He was a little worried, wondering where the summer would take him. Sure, he didn't have a little extra pay after the bowling alley burned down. He thought of Tyra staying with her mother then. Yes, he'd even had his own troubles during Mother's Day, too. 

"You're in a new situation to," he shrugged, recalling how Mother's Day meant just getting pizza and chilling in front of the TV. Of course, it was just his stepmother, but still, she was the only mother he grew up with. But it was always a relaxed day. Although not much different than most days when he lived at home. "I had to spend the day with Millie's mom and her sister and I dunno..I'm beginning to think Tyra hates me. She kept giving me the eye, even when we played Scrabble."

"Tyra's bossy anyway," Rafe squinted in a sweat as he looked back at him to hand him a wrench from the tool bag. "You know how she was when we had a band."

"I know."

KC's eyes brightened as if those were the good old days that were long gone. Still, this togetherness at Millie's house was too much.

"At this rate, her mom will be asking us to move in." 

KC didn't know if he wanted to do that. He was just getting used to Millie actually sleeping with him. 

He'd already had a kicking fit in his sleep, and it scared both of them. Not that Rafe needed to know. Rafe left no stone unturned when it came to talking about Ruby. Honestly, KC never knew how Ruby liked getting her toenails painted. And it was even funnier knowing Rafe was painting her toenails.

KC coughed into a laugh, thinking Millie would never keep still if KC painted her toenails. She would say, "It tickles." Millie's favorite phrase at the moment. 

Of course, Rafe wanted to know what was so funny.

"Oh, nothing." KC shook his head no with a smirk.
