It felt all of May was one big party. And Rafe felt their place was open house these days. They'd had a big bash of "May the 4th be With You and Cinco De Mayo" All through the weekend. He was dragging and Mother's Day was coming.
At least he felt Ruby had a posse now. Of course, it was Gabby who led the way, and she knew people, so now Ruby knew people, mix in the mates he knew from high school, and they really needed to rent out a gym or something if they were going to keep this up.
It was Maddie who questioned him if he thought Ruby was overdoing it. After all, she'd been working on Izzy and Cowan's wedding playlist. It was just a Sunday afternoon at the Campus Park near the end of May. However, Gabby had suddenly been the organizer for the potluck afterward.
"I don't think it'll be hard. She's just making a playlist," he hadn't thought much about it, but at least she wasn't so worried about having the baby now. She did have her bouts where she wasn't sure if she could make it until the due date. Then she would be in hypermode. And she was always on the phone with Gabby.
He was now friends with Ollie, and sometimes, these gatherings included Ollie's friends, which meant he got to see Chili. In fact, Ruby was hoping they'd have a party for Mother's Day.
"We can't do that," he winced. "I have to see my mother."
Usually, his mom was on a business trip, but they'd planned this ages ago. Ruby was indifferent because she had no desire to see her stepmother. He was hoping she was over this, but evidently not.
"Mother's Day is supposed to be a calm day," Rafe told her. He'd invested some time in finding some plants that he knew she would like. His mother always liked to plant flowers on Mother's Day. They had to be there because their other son wasn't.
Wrong.
Now Rafe was perturbed. And wished he'd followed Ruby's lead. But it was too late.
Cade was not alone. He'd gotten there first. In fact, as usual, he did everything first. Maisy was with him, and they had a baby.
Rafe thought he might fly off into orbit with fury. This was so crazy. "Fuck." he said under his breath and of course Ruby slapped the back of her hand in his gut and said he couldn't say that around his parents.
He sighed. Wishing he could beat that twin brother up. But he had to play nice. And damn, if Cade was so nice. He brought plants too. In fact it was like seeing double. Except Maisy had a baby already, and Ruby didn't.
Interesting
ReplyDeleteRuby should organize that party she wants and invites all the mothers of her friends...including Rafe's mother...so he has no excuse :-))
ReplyDeleteIt has such a strong title, and the text really stands up to the challenge:-)

Such a whirlwind of emotions and family dynamics — from unexpected labor to sibling rivalry, it’s a powerful reminder that motherhood (and fatherhood!) never unfolds quite as planned.
